Michelangelo 550: io ritratto da John Poynter
Per celebrare i 550 anni dalla mia nascita, oggi vi propongo un’incisione che ha me come protagonista, realizzata nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento dal pittore Sir Edward John Poynter.
Poynter mi mostrò in trono, un po’ come io affrescai i profeti nella volta della Cappella Sistina. Volle rendermi omaggio soprattutto in qualità di poeta.
Osservare il libro che tengo nella mano destra e la penna, pronta per scrivere i prossimi versi. Non solo.
Alle spalle si leggono alcuni dei mei versi più celebri:
Non ha l’ottimo artista alcun concetto
c’un marmo solo in sé non circonscriva
col suo superchio, e solo a quello arriva
la man che ubbidisce all’intelletto.
Il volto che mi caratterizza deriva dall’immagine di me che tramandò Daniele da Volterra attraverso i busti in bronzo che realizzò dopo la mia morte.
Il modello che si nota dalla parte opposta della penna raffigura il Torso del Belvedere: un’opera che per me fondamentale e che ebbi modo di studiare a lungo a Roma.
Ma chi era Sir Edward John Poynter?
Sir Edward John Poynter nacque nel 1836 a Parigi e nel corso della sua esistenza fu particolarmente apprezzato per opere a soggetto mitologico e storico. Spesso raffigurava scene dell’antico Egitto, della Grecia e di Roma, con figure classiche e ambientazioni esotiche.
Sebbene fosse nato in Francia, trascorse la maggior parte dell’esistenza in Inghilterra. Ebbe modo di perfezionare i suoi studi di pittura in Italia e rimase affascinato dalle mie opere.
Poynter fu una figura di spicco nella Royal Academy di Londra, dove espose le sue opere e ricoprì importanti cariche, tra cui quella di presidente dal 1896 al 1914.

To celebrate the 550th anniversary of my birth, today I propose an engraving that has me as the protagonist, made in the second half of the nineteenth century by the painter Sir Edward John Poynter.
Poynter showed me on a throne, a bit like I frescoed the prophets in the vault of the Sistine Chapel. He wanted to pay homage to me above all as a poet.

The face that characterizes me comes from the image of me that Daniele da Volterra passed down through the bronze busts he made after my death.
