Era il gennaio del 1524 e avevo 48 anni quando decisi di metter mano alla progettazione della biblioteca che avrebbe dovuto accogliere i preziosi manoscritti e gli incunaboli appartenenti alla famiglia Medici.

La commissione mi era stata affidata da papa Clemente VII, al secolo Giulio de’ Medici, eletto papa poco prima, il 19 novembre del 1523, dopo un complicato conclave durato ben quaranta giorni. Conoscevo bene il pontefice e tante volte mangiammo alla stessa mensa da ragazzi.

Era figliolo naturale di Giuliano de Medici, il fratello del Magnifico assassinato durante la Congiura de’ Pazzi,un mese prima che nascesse. La mamma si narra fosse una certa Fioretta, forse figliola di Antonio Gorini.

Da ragazzino fu affidato alle cure di Antonio da Sangallo dallo zio Lorenzo il Magnifico ma poi lo prese direttamente sotto la sua tutela e non mancarono le occasioni in cui ci ritrovammo a condividere intere giornate a Palazzo Medici in quel di Firenze.

Era il gennaio del 1524 quando, certo di accettare la commissione della biblioteca, scrissi al Fattucci che ormai faceva da intermediario tra me e i Medici. “Farò ciò che io saprò benché non sia la mia professione”, precisai.

Non mi consideravo un architetto: ero uno sculture, quello sì. E’ vero che per realizzare la tomba di Giulio II avevo messo progettato un’architettura grandiosa ma realizzare una struttura come quella di una biblioteca mi pareva ancor più impegnativo in termini architettonici.

Fatto sta che riuscii comunque a realizzare un capolavoro che tutt’oggi desta grande ammirazione, cercando di realizzare pure i desideri del pontefice in merito: voleva infatti che i banchi di lettura della Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana fossero in noce e che somigliassero a quelli di Cosimo il Vecchio.

Designing the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, although it is not my profession

It was January 1524 and I was 48 years old at the time when I decided to start designing the library that would house the precious manuscripts and incunabula belonging to the Medici family.

It was January 1524 when, certain of accepting the library commission, I wrote to Fattucci who by then was acting as an intermediary between me and the Medici. “I will do what I know how even though it is not my profession,” I specified.

I did not consider myself an architect: I was a sculptor, that is true. It is true that to create the tomb of Julius II I had designed a grandiose architecture but creating a structure like that of a library seemed even more demanding in architectural terms.

The fact is that I still managed to create a masterpiece that still arouses great admiration today, also trying to realize the wishes of the pontiff in this regard: in fact, he wanted the reading desks of the Laurentian Library to be made of walnut and to resemble those of Cosimo the Elder.
