La Scultura del giorno: la Madonna col Bambino di Gregorio di Lorenzo
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la raffinata Madonna col Bambino scolpita da Gregorio di Lorenzo nel Quattrocento.
Lo scultore che per convenzione a lungo è stato appellato come il Maestro delle Madonne di marmo, era particolarmente attivo a Urbino tra il 1470 e il 1480.
Si formò in ambito fiorentino nel momento in cui Donatello stava per passare a miglior vita mentre sulla scena aveva fatto la sua comparsa il talentuoso Verrocchio.
Le influenze fiorentine in questo dettagliato bassorilievo sono lampanti.
Osservate con quanta cura e maestria Gregorio di Lorenzo scolpì il tessuto damascato del mantello della Vergine, i polsini dell’abito della stessa e l’attenzione che pose nel pensare prima e poi scolpire quella delicata gestualità che rende l’opera memorabile.
Il bassorilievo in marmo è custodito nel Museo Civico d’arte antica nel Palazzo Comunale di Pistoia e proviene dal Convento di San Lorenzo.

Sculpture of the Day: Madonna and Child by Gregorio di Lorenzo
The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the refined Madonna and Child sculpted by Gregorio di Lorenzo in the fifteenth century.
The sculptor who by convention has long been called the Master of the Marble Madonnas, was particularly active in Urbino between 1470 and 1480.
He trained in the Florentine area at the time when Donatello was about to pass away while the talented Verrocchio had made his appearance on the scene.
The Florentine influences in this detailed bas-relief are clear. Observe with what care and mastery Gregorio di Lorenzo sculpted the damask fabric of the Virgin’s cloak, the cuffs of her dress and the care he put into first thinking and then sculpting that delicate gesture that makes the work memorable.
The marble bas-relief is kept in the Civic Museum of Ancient Art in the Palazzo Comunale in Pistoia and comes from the Convent of San Lorenzo.
