La parca vita
Parca vita condussi e non mi concessi i bagordi che il mio status agiato m’avrebbe permesso di vivere.
Frugale nel mangiare e sobrio nel condurre un’esistenza al di fuori della vita mondana, dagli schiamazzi notturni e dalle bettole che qualche mio collega tanto amava frequentare.
La morigeratezza dei costumi sviluppò il mio intelletto. Quel che il corpo non ha se lo immagina. Immagina situazioni, sviluppa sensazioni e crea tutto quello che vorrebbe attraverso l’uso della fantasia.
Se mi fossi dato alla pazza gioia, se avessi dilapidato quanto avevo in agi fine a se stessi, avrei avuto la stessa brama creatrice?
Chissà. Io credo di no.
I miei primi biografi e amici, Vasari e Condivi, riportarono puntualmente nei loro scritti il mio stile di vita, mai sopra le righe.
In particolare, Giorgio Vasari scrisse nell’edizione Giuntina delle vite, pubblicata quattro anni dopo la mia morte: “Né paia nuovo a nessuno che Michelagnolo si dilettasse della solitudine, come quello che era innamorato dell’arte sua, che vul l’uomo per sé solo e cogitativo. e perchè è necessario che chi vuole attendere agli studi di quella fugge la compagnia: avvenga che chi attende alle considerazioni dell’arte non è mai solo né senza pensieri; e coloro che gliela attribuivano a fantasticheria et a stranezza, hanno il torto…”

The modest life
I led a modest life and did not indulge in the revelry that my wealthy status would have allowed me to experience. Frugal in eating and sober in leading an existence outside of worldly life, from the nocturnal noise and the taverns that some of my colleagues loved to frequent.
The moderation of morals developed my intellect. What the body does not have it imagines. He imagines situations, develops sensations and creates everything he would like through the use of imagination. If I had given myself over to mad joy, if I had squandered what I had as an end in itself, would I have had the same creative desire?
Maybe. I do not think so.
My first biographers and friends, Vasari and Condivi, promptly reported my lifestyle in their writings, never over the top.
