Riprendo oggi la rubrica Le opere del Natale nella quale vi propongo i dipinti più belli dedicati alla nascita di Cristo e ai momenti immediatamente successivi a quell’evento straordinario.

Per ricominciare laddove avevo lasciato la narrazione, vi propongo l’Adorazione dei pastori di Giorgione, nota anche come natività Allendale dal nome dei baroni che ne erano in possesso fino al 1937.

E’ un dipinto a tempera su tavola che l’artista realizzò fra il 1505 e il 1510, oggi appartenente alla National Gallery of Art di Washington.

Questa straordinaria Natività è caratterizzata da un paesaggio tipicamente veneto inondato di luce, in netto contrasto con la grotta buia alle spalle della Madonna in adorazione, dalla quale fanno capolino il bue e l’asinello.

Il Bambino appena venuto alla luce è stato adagiato su un panno bianco che ricorda il sudario che lo accoglierà 33 anni dopo. Al Suo cospetto sono giunti due pastori: quello in primo piano già s’è inginocchiato posando il cappello sul terreno mentre l’altro si sta per mettere nella medesima posizione ma ancora è in piedi.

Sulla sinistra in primo piano Giorgione dipinse il tronco reciso di un albero circondato da due vitali cespugli. Nelle opere rinascimentali niente viene dipinto a caso o per semplice decorazione. E’ infatti un chiaro riferimento alla profezia di Isaia che anticipa la nascita di Cristo di secoli.

“Un germoglio spunterà dal tronco di Iesse,
un virgulto germoglierà dalle sue radici.
Su di lui si poserà lo spirito del Signore,
spirito di sapienza e di intelligenza,
spirito di consiglio e di fortezza,
spirito di conoscenza e di timore del Signore.” Isaia 1.11

Come è arrivata l’opera da Roma fino negli Stati Uniti?

Ebbene, la tavola apparteneva alle collezioni del cardinale Fesh ubicata nella città eterna che vennero messe all’asta nel 1845. La Natività di Giorgione fu acquistata prima a Parigi e poi rivenduta a Londra, dove entrò a far parte delle collezioni dei baroni Allendale nello Yorkshire.

Nel 1937 fu ancora una volta messa in vendita e comprata da Duven Brothers che cedettero dietro lauta ricompensa a Samuel H. Kress. Fu proprio Kress, nel 1939, a donarla alla galleria americana che stava nascendo in quel momento.

The works of Christmas: the Adoration of the Shepherds by Giorgione

Today I resume the column The Works of Christmas in which I propose the most beautiful paintings dedicated to the birth of Christ and the moments immediately following that extraordinary event.

To start again where I left off the narrative, I propose the Adoration of the Shepherds by Giorgione, also known as the Allendale Nativity from the name of the barons who were in possession of it until 1937.

It is a tempera painting on wood that the artist created between 1505 and 1510, now belonging to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

This extraordinary Nativity is characterized by a typically Venetian landscape flooded with light, in stark contrast to the dark cave behind the Madonna in adoration, from which the ox and the donkey peep out.

The Child who had just come to light was placed on a white cloth that recalls the shroud that will welcome him 33 years later. Two shepherds have arrived in front of him: the one in the foreground has already knelt down, placing his hat on the ground while the other is about to put himself in the same position but is still standing.

On the left in the foreground Giorgione painted the severed trunk of a tree surrounded by two vital bushes. In Renaissance works nothing is painted randomly or for simple decoration. It is in fact a clear reference to Isaiah’s prophecy which anticipates the birth of Christ by centuries.

“A shoot will grow from the trunk of Jesse,
a shoot will sprout from its roots.
The spirit of the Lord will rest on him,
spirit of wisdom and intelligence,
spirit of counsel and fortitude,
spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.” Isaiah 1.11

How did the work arrive from Rome to the United States?

Well, the panel belonged to the collections of Cardinal Fesh located in the eternal city which were auctioned in 1845. Giorgione’s Nativity was first purchased in Paris and then resold in London, where it became part of the collections of the Barons Allendale in Yorkshire .

In 1937 it was once again put up for sale and bought by Duven Brothers who sold it to Samuel H. Kress for a handsome fee. It was Kress himself, in 1939, who donated it to the American gallery that was being born at that time.
