Il 27 settembre 2023 Casa Buonarroti inaugurerà la mostra dedicata ad Artemisia Gentileschi e al dipinto dell’Inclinazione che realizzò su commissione di Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane dal titolo “Artemisia nel museo di Michelangelo”.

Il mio pronipote, figliolo di Leonardo Buonarroti, era molto amico di Artemisia e la stimava talmente tanto che le pagò quel lavoro tre volte in più delle altre opere facenti parte della stessa serie. 

Tutta questa generosità probabilmente fu dovuta anche al fatto che Michelangelo ben conosceva le precarie condizioni economiche in cui versava allora Artemisia, appena giunta a Firenze dopo aver dovuto abbandonare Roma dopo il processo per stupro contro Agostino Tassi.

Durante quel terribile dibattimento sembrava lei ad essere accusata e addirittura fu sottoposta a tortura per comprovare l’attendibilità della propria testimonianza.

Il dipinto dell’Inclinazione ultimato da poco di restaurare da Elizabeth Wicks potrà essere così apprezzato al meglio e ad altezza d’occhi dai visitatori prima di essere ricollocato nella sua posizione abituale, ovvero all’interno del soffitto della galleria.

Avete mai notato che la figura dipinta ha una bussola? Si ritiene possa essere un omaggio alle teorie di Galileo Galilei relative al movimento e al magnetismo.

Il dipinto risale proprio all’anno in cui la chiesa dichiarò Galileo eretico ed Artemisia era una sua grande amica.

“La mostra esplorerà il contesto attorno alla creazione del dipinto, compreso il significato del suo debutto fiorentino e i suoi rapporti chiave con il Granduca Cosimo de’ Medici e l’ambiente culturale della città”.

Il restauro dell’Inclinazione è stato sostenuto da Calliope Arts e Christian Levett, in collaborazione con Museo e Fondazione Casa Buonarroti.

La mostra “Artemisia nel museo di Michelangelo” aprirà al pubblico dal 27 settembre 2023 fino all’8 gennaio 2024.

Artemisia in Michelangelo’s museum: the new exhibition at Casa Buonarroti

On 27 September 2023 Casa Buonarroti will inaugurate the exhibition dedicated to Artemisia Gentileschi and the painting of the Inclination that she created on commission from Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger entitled “Artemisia in Michelangelo’s museum”.

My great-grandson, son of Leonardo Buonarroti, was a very good friend of Artemisia and esteemed her so much that he paid her for that work three times more than her other works in the same series.

All this generosity was probably also due to the fact that Michelangelo was well aware of the precarious economic conditions in which Artemisia found herself at the time, having just arrived in Florence after having had to leave Rome following the rape trial against Agostino Tassi.

During that terrible trial it seemed she was the one accused and was even subjected to torture to prove the reliability of her testimony.

The painting of the Inclination recently completed by Elizabeth Wicks will be able to be appreciated to the fullest and at eye level by visitors before being relocated to its usual position, i.e. inside the gallery ceiling.

Have you ever noticed that the painted figure has a compass? It is believed to be a tribute to Galileo Galilei’s theories relating to movement and magnetism.

The painting dates back to the year in which the church declared Galileo a heretic and Artemisia was a great friend of him.

“The exhibition will explore the context around the painting’s creation, including the significance of her Florentine debut and her key relationships with Grand Duke Cosimo de’ Medici and the city’s cultural milieu.”

The restoration of the Inclination was supported by Calliope Arts and Christian Levett, in collaboration with the Casa Buonarroti Museum and Foundation.

The exhibition “Artemisia in Michelangelo’s museum” will open to the public from 27 September 2023 until 8 January 2024.
