La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Pane e Lavoro, opera realizzata da Emanuele Caggiano nel 1862, esposta presso il Museo del Sannio a Benevento.

La scultura raffigura una donna che, a capo chino, sta lavorando a una raffinata rete. La giovane concentrata sul proprio lavoro ha una veste drappeggiata che le scivola dalle spalle lasciandole i seni a vista.

Siede su un semplice sgabello e pare non vedere tutto quello che le si muove attorno: lavora e basta. Ai suoi piedi Caggiano scolpì un cestino finemente lavorato all’interno del quale si intravede del pane.

La lettura dell’opera è abbastanza semplice: mostra l’impegno quotidiano per guadagnarsi la sussistenza. Pane e lavoro.

I folti capelli riprodotti dall’artista con un buon realismo, incorniciano il volto della ragazza che sicuramente non vive negli agi.

Guardate lo scabro sgabello privo di schienale, la mancanza dei calzari e la semplicità del suo abbigliamento. Sono tutti elementi che fanno pensare alle condizioni precarie della giovane che però trova il suo riscatto nel lavoro sebbene da tempo pare abbia perso la spensieratezza.

La sensualità dell’opera è prorompente. Le spalle e la schiena lasciate nude così come i seni in vista e la delicatezza delle sue mani che procedono con il lavoro incantano anche lo spettatore meno attento.

La scultura Pane e Lavoro di Caggiano dalla forte impronta sociale, fu acquistata dal principe Oddone di Savoia e trovò posto nel Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte a Napoli.

Successivamente, nel 1956, fu trasferita a Benevento, presso il Museo del Sannio, perché proprio in questa città era nato lo scultore il 12 giugno del 1837.

The reading of the work is quite simple: it shows the daily commitment to earning a living. Bread and work.

The thick hair reproduced by the artist with good realism, frame the face of the girl who certainly does not live in her comfort.

Look at the rugged backless stool, the lack of shoes and the simplicity of her clothing. These are all elements that suggest the precarious conditions of the young woman who, however, finds redemption in her work, although it seems she has lost her light-heartedness for some time now.

The sensuality of the work is irrepressible. Her shoulders and back left bare as well as her breasts in sight of her and the delicacy of her hands that proceed with the work enchant even the less attentive spectator.

Caggiano’s Pane e Lavoro sculpture with a strong social imprint was purchased by Prince Oddone of Savoy and found a place in the Royal Palace of Capodimonte in Naples.

Subsequently, in 1956, it was transferred to Benevento, to the Sannio Museum, because the sculptor was born in this city on 12 June 1837.
