Quando ci si ritrova al cospetto della Basilica di San Pietro si fa davvero fatica a notare ogni dettaglio. La sua imponenza e le tante opere che la decorano quasi stordiscono. La ragione lascia spazio all’emozione e ci si perde.

Al centro del timpano della facciata della Basilica di San Pietro fa bella mostra di sé un grande stemma papale. Ebbene, è quello di Paolo V, al secolo Camillo Borghese, eletto papa il 16 maggio 1605, quando oramai io ero morto e stecchito da tempo.

Al di sotto dello stemma c’è la grande epigrafe che attraversa tutta la facciata: “IN HONOREM PRINCIPIS APOST(olorum) PAVLVS V BVRGHESIVS ROMANVS PONT(ifex) MAX(imus) AN(no) MDCXII PONT(ificati) VII” ovvero “in onore del principe degli apostoli Paolo V Borghese romano pontefice massimo nell’anno settimo del pontificato”.

A conti fatti il settimo anno del suo pontificato fu il 1612.

Ma perché sulla facciata è scritto a lettere cubitali il nome di papa Paolo V Borghese ed è stato apposto il suo stemma?

Ebbene, fu proprio lui ad affidare a Carlo Maderno la modifica del mio progetto della basilica che comportò un cambio radicale della pianta. Al termine di quei lavori volle che il suo nome fosse impresso a futura memoria e a beneficio del proprio ego sulla facciata e fece posizionare sul timpano lo stemma di famiglia.

San Pietro: the papal coat of arms on the facade

When you find yourself in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, it’s really hard to notice every detail. Its grandeur and the many works that decorate it almost stun. Reason leaves room for emotion and you get lost.
