Il 2023 sarà l’anno dedicato al quinto centenario della morte del Perugino, al secolo Pietro Vannucci. Per l’occasione saranno diverse le iniziative organizzate per ricordare il grande artista fra le quali la grande mostra dal titolo “Il meglio maestro d’Italia. Perugino nel suo tempo” che aprirà i battenti al pubblico dal 4 marzo fino all’11 giugno del 2023 alla Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria di Perugia.

L’esposizione, curata da Marco Pierini direttore della Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria e da Veruska Pacchiarelli, conservatrice del museo, proporrà le sue opere realizzate prima del 1504, quando la sua carriera era all’apice.

La mostra sarà il fiore all’occhiello delle celebrazioni dedicate al quinto centenario dalla morte del Perugino e vedrà coinvolti con importanti prestiti alcuni dei più importanti musei nazionali e internazionali come per esempio la Galleria degli Uffizi e la National Gallery di Washington.

“Una mostra che rappresenta il fulcro delle celebrazioni per i 500 anni dalla morte di Perugino quella della Galleria Nazionale Galleria nazionale fondamentale, grazie anche al contributo di grandi musei internazionali, per capire il ruolo dell’artista nel suo tempo, la fama che lo ha accompagnato in vita e il suo riconosciuto valore di Maestro”.

Il Perugino per due decenni fu il più noto, ambito e influente pittore italiano tanto da essere definito dal banchiere Agostino Chigi come “Il meglio maestro d’Italia”. Ebbe modo di frequentare la bottega del Verrocchio assieme a Leonardo da Vinci e al Botticelli. E’ considerato tutt’oggi uno dei massimi esponenti dell’umanesimo e il più talentuoso pittore umbro del XV secolo.

Il percorso espositivo sarà incentrato su oltre settanta dipinti che il Perugino realizzò prima del 1504, anno nel quale lavorò alle tre commissioni che segnarono il punto più alto della sua carriera: La Lotta fra Amore e Castità a Mantova conservata oggi al Louvre, La Crocifissione della Cappella Chigi in Sant’Agostino a Siena e lo Sposalizio della Vergine per la cappella del Santo Anello del duomo di Perugia, opera oggi esposta in Francia, al Musée des Beaux-Arts di Caen.

La mostra metterà in luce il percorso artistico del Perugino dalle prime collaborazioni a bottega dal Verrocchio fino alle celebri imprese fiorentine che costituirono la base per la sua fortuna come per esempio la pala di San Domenico a Fiesole o le tre tavole di San Giusto alle Mura, oggi proprietà della Galleria degli Uffizi.

La mostra “Il meglio maestro d’Italia. Perugino nel suo tempo” sarà l’occasione per riflettere sul ruolo l’artista ebbe nel panorama artistico a lui contemporaneo e su rapporto che lo legò indissolubilmente ai protagonisti di quella epoca che lo vide protagonista.

Perugino: the best teacher of Italy

He is still considered one of the greatest exponents of humanism and the most talented Umbrian painter of the fifteenth century.

The exhibition itinerary will focus on over seventy paintings that Perugino made before 1504, the year in which he worked on the three commissions that marked the highest point of his career: The Lotta between Love and Chastity in Mantua now preserved in the Louvre, The Crucifixion of Chigi Chapel in Sant’Agostino in Siena and the Marriage of the Virgin for the chapel of the Holy Ring of the cathedral of Perugia, a work now exhibited in France, at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen.

The exhibition will highlight Perugino’s artistic path from the first collaborations in the workshop of Verrocchio to the famous Florentine enterprises that formed the basis for his fortune such as the altarpiece of San Domenico in Fiesole or the three tables of San Giusto alle Mura, today property of the Uffizi Gallery.

The exhibition “The best master of Italy. Perugino in his time” will be an opportunity to reflect on the role the artist had in the artistic panorama of his time and on the relationship that bound him inextricably to the protagonists of that era that saw him protagonist.
