Un crocifisso in legno da regalare al mi nipote
Nell’estate del 1562, quando già avevo compiuto da lungi gli 87 anni d’età, mi misi in testa di scolpire un Crocifisso in legno di tiglio da regalare al mi nipote Lionardo.
Per lavorarci però avevo bisogno di una serie di ferri per il legno come scalpelli, bulini, lime, raspe e sgorbie. A Roma non avevo tutta questa strumentazione a disposizione e nemmeno avrei saputo dove cercarla.
Antonio suo servitore mi à detto che Michelagnolo vorebe fare umo crocifisso di lenggnio e che vorebbe che voi li mandasi tutti queli feri che per simile opera ocorano, e che domandiate costì a qualchuno del mestieri, cioè intagliatori di fiure di legniame. E fateli fare beli e buoni e mandateli quanto prima.”

Il Mariottini era un mio confidente e volle darmi una mano. Venne a sapere da Antonio Mini, mio servitore, che avevo la necessità di trovar presto questi arnesi e scrisse al mi nipote Lionardo a Firenze che sicuramente li avrebbe cercati e trovati dai migliori fabbri della zona.
È possibile immaginare che dimensioni potesse avere quel Crocifisso? A distanza di secoli e senza documenti che facciano accenno alle sue misure si possono fare solamente supposizioni.
Potrebbe essere stato un Crocifisso piccolo per devozione privata ma chissà, vista la quantità di ferri richiesta per lavorarlo e il fatto che dopo un anno ancora non lo avessi terminato, si potrebbe ipotizzare che fosse stata un’opera addirittura un po’ più grande del naturale.
Al periodo in cui ero intento a lavorare a questa scultura lignea appartengono anche al serie di disegni dedicati allo studio della Crocifissione, oggi conservati al Louvre, al British Museum, alla Royal Collection e all’Ashmolean Museum.

A wooden crucifix to give to my nephew
In the summer of 1562, when I had already turned 87 years of age, I took it into my head to carve a crucifix in lime wood to give to my grandson Lionardo.

Mariottini was my confidant and wanted to give me a hand. He learned from Antonio Mini, my servant, that I needed to find these tools soon and he wrote to my nephew Lionardo in Florence that he would surely look for them and find them by the best blacksmiths in the area.
Is it possible to imagine what dimensions that Crucifix could have? Centuries later and without documents mentioning his measurements, one can only make assumptions.
It may have been a small Crucifix for private devotion but who knows, given the amount of iron required to work it and the fact that after a year I still hadn’t finished it, it could be assumed that it was even a little bigger than natural work. .
To the period in which I was intent on working on this wooden sculpture also belong to the series of drawings dedicated to the study of the Crucifixion, now preserved in the Louvre, the British Museum, the Royal Collection and the Ashmolean Museum.
