Alla scoperta del Padiglione delle Carrozze dei Musei Vaticani
Il Padiglione delle Carrozze venne inaugurato da papa Paolo VI il 19 aprile del 1973 ed è il settore dei Musei Vaticani dedicato alla raccolta dei mezzi di trasporto che nel corso dei secoli sono stati adoperati dai papi che si sono succeduti.
Il percorso espositivo si snoda lungo 105 metri e ad aprire la sezione ci sono le portantine. Questi troni riccamente decorati venivano portati a spalla dagli addetti. Fra quelle esposte ce n’è una assai moderna appartenuta a Giovanni XXIII. Fu adoperata quando il dolore allo stomaco impediva al pontefice di camminare e lo indeboliva sempre di più.
Il vero gioiello della collezione è la Berlina di Gran Gala voluta da papa Leone XII e realizzata a Roma nel 1826. Una carrozza particolarmente lussuosa che farebbe invidia a quella di Cenerentola. Arrivando con questo mezzo speciale, il papa era già visibile da molto lontano con un tranino composto da sei cavalli bianchi decorati con alti pennacchi dorati sul capo.
Nel padiglione ci sono anche altre importanti carrozze come le nove da cerimonia particolarmente elaborate e lussuose. Degna di nota è quella appartenuta al cardinale Luciano Luigi Bonaparte che gli fu regalata dal cugino Napoleone III e la berlina che permise a Pio IX di tornare a Roma dopo essere scappato a Gaeta travestito da prete, per sfuggire ai moti del 1848.
Proseguendo la visita al padiglione, si vedono auto storiche come la prima auto entrata nello Stato Vaticano poco dopo che Pio XI fu eletto papa, targata Corpo Diplomatico 404. Si tratta di una Bianchi Tipo 15, donata dalle donne di un’associazione religiosa milanese.
L’ultima auto entrata a far parte del Padiglione delle Carrozze è la celebre Fiat Campagnola, regalata a papa Giovanni Paolo II durante la sua visita a Torino. Questa vettura è entrata tristemente nella storia per aver vissuto assieme al pontefice il terribile attentato del 13 maggio 1981.

Discovering the Carriage Pavilion of the Vatican Museums
The Carriage Pavilion was inaugurated by Pope Paul VI on April 19, 1973 and is the sector of the Vatican Museums dedicated to the collection of means of transport that over the centuries have been used by successive popes.
The exhibition path winds along 105 meters and the sedan chairs open the section. These richly decorated thrones were carried on the shoulders of the attendants. Among those exhibited there is a very modern one that belonged to John XXIII. It was used when stomach pain prevented the pope from walking and weakened him more and more.
The real jewel of the collection is the Gran Gala sedan commissioned by Pope Leo XII and built in Rome in 1826. A particularly luxurious carriage that would be the envy of Cinderella’s. Arriving by this special vehicle, the pope was already visible from far away with a train consisting of six white horses decorated with high golden plumes on their heads.
In the pavilion there are also other important carriages such as the nine particularly elaborate and luxurious ceremonial carriages. Worthy of note is the one that belonged to Cardinal Luciano Luigi Bonaparte which was given to him by his cousin Napoleon III and the sedan that allowed Pius IX to return to Rome after escaping to Gaeta disguised as a priest, to escape the riots of 1848.
Continuing the visit to the pavilion, you can see historic cars as the first car that entered the Vatican State shortly after Pius XI was elected pope, with the Diplomatic Corps 404. It is a Bianchi Tipo 15, donated by the women of a Milanese religious association.
