Firenze è piena di sorprese e aggirandovi fra piazze e strade troverete sempre cose assai interessanti da conoscere e guardare. Oggi vi voglio raccontare un po’ di cose sulle Fontane dei Mostri Marini che si trovano in Piazza Santissima Annunziata a Firenze.

Queste due fontane hanno alle spalle una storia assai singolare. Furono commissionate nel 1626 a Pietro Tacca per decorare il Porto di Livorno che già era stato arricchito con i suoi meravigliosi Quattro Mori, sistemati ai quattro angoli della base della scultura dedicata a Ferdinando I de’ Medici.

Tacca cominciò a lavorare alle fontane assieme agli allievi Francesco Maria Bandini e Bartolomeo Salvini nel 1627. Dopo la morte dell’artista si preferì collocare quelle fontane a Firenze in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. Era l’anno 1641 quando le Fontane dei Mostri Marini furono disposte simmetricamente con al centro il monumento equestre di Ferdinando I.

Le due Fontane dei Mostri sono ricche di dettagli marini come pesci, conchiglie, crostacei, alghe ma anche mostri immaginati da Tacca. In origine i getti d’acqua non erano proiettati verso l’alto ma venivano lasciati ricadere dalle bocche dei mostri verso il basso.

“… l’invenzione recede dallo stile ordinario d’alzar acqua con scherzo, vedendovisi in ciascheduna due mostri marini, che con le ginocchia piegate, e gambe a coda marina avviticchiate insieme, voltandosi le spalle alquanto chinati, mostrano di vomitare acqua, qual cade in certe vasche a foggia di nicchie, e di lì in altre a piè delle basi, in cui sono rapportati festoni di getto composti d’animali acquatici …”

The Fountains of the Sea Monsters in Florence

Florence is full of surprises and wandering around the squares and streets you will always find very interesting things to know and look at. Today I want to tell you a few things about the Fountains of the Sea Monsters located in Piazza Santissima Annunziata in Florence.

These two fountains have a very unique history behind them. They were commissioned in 1626 to Pietro Tacca to decorate the Port of Livorno which had already been enriched with his marvelous Four Moors, placed at the four corners of the base of the sculpture dedicated to Ferdinando I de’ Medici.

Tacca began working on the fountains together with his pupils Francesco Maria Bandini and Bartolomeo Salvini in 1627. After the artist’s death it was preferred to place those fountains in Florence in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. It was the year 1641 when the Fountains of the Sea Monsters were arranged symmetrically with the equestrian monument of Ferdinando I in the centre.

The two Fountains of the Monsters are full of marine details such as fish, shells, crustaceans, algae but also monsters imagined by Tacca. Originally the jets of water were not projected upwards but were let fall downwards from the mouths of the monsters.

… the invention withdraws from the ordinary style of raising water with a joke, seeing in each one two sea monsters, which with their knees bent, and legs with a sea tail twined together, turning their backs somewhat bent, show that they vomit water, which falls into certain basins in the shape of niches, and from there in others at the foot of the bases, in which festoons made of cast made up of aquatic animals are related…”
