Questo foglio che vedete è molto conosciuto. Oggi appartiene alle collezioni del British Museum ed è relativo agli studi degli angeli apteri per il Giudizio Universale. Tracciai i vari studi con un lapis nero ben appuntito su carta filigranata: una tipologia di carta che adoperai spesso a Roma, dopo il 1532.

L’angelo aptero oggetto di questi studi è quello che poi affrescai nella lunetta destra, nel gruppo che porta in volo gli strumenti della passione. In particolare riprodussi con dovizia di particolari i muscoli della schiena e del lato del torace.

Nello studio del braccio in destro dell’angelo più in alto esclusi le dita perchè probabilmente già immaginavo sarebbero state nascoste dai drappeggi di un altra figura.

Studies for angels without wings

sheet you see is very well known. Today it belongs to the collections of the British Museum and is related to studies of angels without wings for the Last Judgment. I traced the various studies with a well-pointed black pencil on watermarked paper: a type of paper that I often used in Rome, after 1532.

The open object of these studies is the one I later frescoed in the right lunette, in the group that carries the instruments of passion. In particular, I reproduced the back and chest muscles in great detail.

In the study of the right arm of the angel above, excluding the fingers because I probably already imagined they would have been hidden by the drapery of another figure.
