La vigilia di Ognissanti del 1541 papa Paolo III inaugurò il Giudizio Universale, svelandolo al mondo. Lui cadde in ginocchio pregando vedendo in ciò che avevo affrescato davvero l’ultimo terribile giorno del mondo. Gli altri intervenuti guardavano quella parete cercando di cogliere il significato di ogni scena. Chi si commosse fino alle lacrime, chi rimase affascinato dalla bellezza di quei corpi privi di veste alcuna mentre i più acuti tentavano di capirne il significato iconografico.

C’è chi gridò allo scandalo e chi invece da subito si rese conto che quello era un vero e proprio capolavoro, destinato a fare scuola. Il mio caro amico Anton Francesco Doni, un paio d’anni dopo l’inaugurazione dei Giudizio, mi scrisse in una lettera ciò che ne pensava in questi termini: “In quel dì che Cristo verrà in Divinità, meriterà che egli imponga che tutti faccino quelle attitudini, mostrino quanta bellezza, e l’inferno tenga quelle tenebre che Voi avete dipinte, per non si potere migliorare”.

Al Doni tanto parve perfetta la mia rappresentazione che fin’anche nostro Signore dovrà attenersi a quella durante il giorno del Giudizio perchè non sarà possibile fare di meglio.
