8 settembre 1296: fondazione dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore
Oggi a Firenze si celebra la fondazione dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore. Era l’8 settembre del 1296 quando venne posata la prima pietra della chiesa che sarebbe stata edificata in sostituzione della oramai fatiscente Santa Reparata.
Non fu scelta a caso la data ma si preferì avviare i lavori sotto gli auspici della Natività della Vergine, ricordata dalla Chiesa cattolica per l’appunto l’8 di settembre.
Quanto tempo ci volle per vedere la basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore così com’è oggi? Sette secoli di lavori… pensate che la facciata fu portata a termine solo nel 1870 su progetto di Emilio de Fabris. Le polemiche che suscitò quel progetto furono infinite e ancora non si sono del tutto placate. In occasione di questa giornata di festeggiamenti, oggi 8 settembre 2018, il Grande Museo del Duomo rimarrà aperto con il consueto orario ma consentirà a tutti i fiorentini l’accesso gratuito, presentando all’ingresso un valido documento d’identità.

Today in Florence the foundation of the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore is celebrated. It was September 8, 1296 when the first stone of the church was laid, which was to be built to replace the now dilapidated Santa Reparata.
The date was not chosen by chance but it was preferred to start work under the auspices of the Nativity of the Virgin, remembered by the Catholic Church precisely on 8 September.
How long did it take to see the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore as it is today? Seven centuries of work … just think that the facade was completed only in 1870 on a project by Emilio de Fabris. The controversy that this project aroused was endless and still have not completely subsided. On the occasion of this day of celebrations, today 8 September 2018, the Grande Museo del Duomo will remain open at the usual time but will allow all Florentines free access by presenting a valid identity document at the entrance.
