Il Baccanale dei Putti è uno dei disegni più bizzarri e insoliti che realizzai. Il committente? Nessuno: fu uno di quelli che regalai a Tommaso de’ Cavalieri. Non vi dico quanti esperti nel corso degli anni abbiano provato a leggerne il significato e chissà se davvero alla fine qualcuno ci sia riuscito o ci riuscirà in futuro.

Il disegno raffigura diverse scene nelle quali i protagonisti sono sempre dei putti ad eccezione dei due soli adulti che si trovano nella parte più bassa. E’ la rappresentazione di un rito pagano dionisiaco in piena regola. C’è la mescita del vino in alto a destra, al centro il sacrificio di un cavallo e la cottura della carne in un pentolone un po’ più a sinistra.

Nella fascia bassa del disegno una vecchia allatta un putto mentre davanti a sé, sopra una tovaglia, sono posizionati un teschio, un’anfora e una coppa oramai vuota.  A poca distanza un putto sorregge il mantello a un uomo sbronzo mezzo addormentato: non è così semplice capire se lo stia coprendo oppure se voglia svelare le sue nudità.

Le interpretazione del disegno, come detto prima, sono varie e tutte peraltro plausibili. Ce n’è una che mi piace in particolare ed è quella proposta dalla Acidini. L’opera a suo dire raffigurerebbe “la fallacia dei piaceri carnali, che già mentre si godono sono ingannevoli, e quando poi si esauriscono lasciano dietro di sé carestia, accidia, disordine dei sensi e altri vizi”.

Bacchanalia of Children

The Bacchanalia of Children is one of the most bizarre and unusual designs that I created. The commissioner? No one.  It was one of those drawings I gave Tommaso de ‘Cavalieri.  I can’t tell you haow many experts have tried to understand its meaning and who knows if someone has or ever will.

The drawing depicts several scenes in which the main figures are always the children with the exception of only two adults who are in the lower part.  The drawing focuses on a pagan feast dedicated to Dionysus at its peak. There is the pouring of the wine into servings at the top right, in the middle the sacrifice of a horse and the cooking of it to its left.

In the lower part of the drawing there’s an old lady giving her breast milk to a child and placed in front of them is a tablecloth with a skull, an amphora and an empty glass of wine. Close to them is a cherub holding a mantle  over an almost slepping drunk: we honestly don’t know if the child is covering him or wanting to reveal his nudity.

The meaning of the drawing, as mentioned before are many and all of which questionable. There’s one interpretation that I like which was written by Acidini. The work of art he said represents “the false idea of carnal pleasures, which while enjoying them are already deceiving…. and when done leave you with wanting more, a feeling of sloth & disorder as well as other vices.”
