Quando si fa un po’ d’ordine sbuca sempre fuori qualcosa ch’era rimasto sotto una pila di libri, fra uno scaffale e l’altro, dietro a un cassetto o chissà dove per chissà quanto tempo. Con le pulizie di primavera in atto, oltre a un mucchio di polvere, è saltato fuori anche questo disegno che realizzai molto probabilmente fra il 1508 e il 1509. In quel frangente ero impegnato ad affrescare la prima metà della volta della Sistina.

Questo foglio venne con tutta probabilità portato in Francia da Antonio Mini e non è un caso se sul verso compaiono anche degli studi condotti proprio da lui.

La donna ricurva verso la terra che sta arando a mano è Eva. In un primo momento avevo pensato di raffigurare nella volta, dopo la Cacciata dal Paradiso di Adamo ed Eva, la condanna al lavoro. Proprio l’immagine di Eva fu pi ripresa nei suoi affreschi dal Primaticcio a Fontainbleu.

Sicuramente questa figura, abbigliata con una leggera veste che ne mette in evidenza le forme, è opera mia: i dubbi sono veramente pochi. Il satiro invece pare più disegnato da Raffaello da Montelupo, scultore che collaborò con me in diverse occasioni.

Il disegno in questione è appartenuto anche alla regina Cristina di Svezia e attualmente è conservato presso il Teyler Museum di Haarlem.

The sitting satyr watching the farmer

When you tidy up something always pops out that was left under a pile of books, in between a shelf and another, behind a drawer or somewhere else and has been there for who knows how long.  With spring cleaning coming up, besides a pile of dust, I found this drawing that probably made between 1508 and 1509. During those years I was busy frescoing the first half of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

This drawing was probably brought to France by Antonio Mini and it is no coincidence that on the back there are some drawings done by him.

The woman that is plowing looking down is Eve. After the Expulsion from Paradise of Adam and Eve, the condemned to work, I was going to paint this. The image of Eve is what he then used in his frescoed by Primaticcio at Fontainebleau.

The figure dressed in a light robe that highlights the her body shape is my work: there’s no doubt about that. The satyr instead seems to be thre hand Raphael da Montelupo, a sculptor who worked with me on several occasions.

The drawing also belonged to Queen Christina of Sweden and is currently preserved at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
