Il disegno che vedete a seguire si trova conservato presso l‘Ashmolean Museum di Oxford. E’ un vecchio cieco che avanza appoggiandosi a un bastone con la vivace guida offerta da un ragazzino.

I critici e gli studiosi si sono sbizzarriti a cercare di capire perché avessi realizzato questo disegno. Gli esperti non si accontentano mai di guardare un disegno e basta, hanno sempre la necessità di trovare a quale opera tangibile fosse destinato.

E se l’avessi tracciato per il solo piacere di farlo o se fosse lo studio assai dettagliato di un personaggio che magari si aggirava per le strade romane o fiorentine dell’epoca mia?

Fatto sta che in anni non troppo remoti, questo vecchio è stato interpretato come la figura di San Cosma accompagnato da uno dei fratelli minori. Il disegno, secondo questa versione sostenuta da Hartt, sarebbe stato destinato a uno dei rilievi della facciata di San Lorenzo a Firenze. A me pare  che sia stata usata parecchia fantasia in questa interpretazione dato che non ci sono disegni per questi rilievi della facciata che riportano una figura anche vagamente simile per atteggiamento.

Ci sono un paio di versi miei che sembrano quasi descrivere quest’immagine connotandola di altro significato: “Povero vecchio e servo, in forze altrui ch’io son disfatto, s’io non muoio presto”

The old blind man

The drawing you see below is kept at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It is an old blind man who advances leaning on a stick with the lively guidance offered by a young boy. The critics and the scholars have indulged in trying to understand why I had made this design. We do not know why, but scholars are never content to look at a design and that’s it, they always need to find what tangible work it was intended for. And if I had traced it for the sole pleasure of doing it or if it was the very detailed study of a character who might have wandered the Roman or Florentine streets of my age?

The fact is that in years not too remote, this old man has been interpreted as the figure of St. Cosma accompanied by one of the younger brothers. According to this version, supported by Hartt, the drawing was intended for one of the reliefs of the San Lorenzo facade in Florence. It seems to me that a lot of fantasy has been used in this interpretation since there are no drawings for these reliefs of the facade that show a figure also vaguely similar in attitude.

There are a couple of verses of mine that almost seem to describe this image by conveying it of another meaning: “Poor old man and servant, in the strength of others that I am unmade, if I do not die soon “
