The Virgin of the Last Judgment
She is all huddled to the right of her Son, wrapped in a pink robe and with part of the blue cloak covering her legs. It is right under the raised arm of Christ that gives life to all the circular motion of the Last Judgment. Look at the face of the Madonna facing down: she has a compassionate look but also aware of the fact that now she can no longer do anything to save souls.
In the preparatory drawings, those made before the cartoons, both Christ and the Madonna have very different and decidedly more agitated attitudes. In the drawing preserved in the Uffizi, the Madonna intercedes in favor of the damned while in the fresco she shows herself impotent, devoid of any power of intercession between the divine and the human.
“Separated and close to his son his mother, fearful and almost afraid of anger and from the secret of God, seems to hide under the Son.” Thus described my Virgin Vasari in the second edition of Le Vite.
