La storia e i racconti legati agli affreschi della Cappella Paolina non sono così popolari come quelli riconducibili alla più famosa Cappella Sistina.

Chissà perché… eppure per realizzare quei due affreschi sputai il sangue. Ero già malato e i calcoli ai reni non mi lasciavano tregua. Nei giorni in cui stavo bene mi arrampicavo su per i ponteggi e dipingevo dall’alba al tramonto. Talvolta proseguivo facendomi lume con i bracieri e riuscivo a concludere grandi porzioni di affresco.

Quando invece la salute mi voltava le spalle, ero costretto a mettermi a letto per diversi giorni di fila e non c’era modo di portare avanti il lavoro commissionatomi.

Alla fine però conclusi la crocifissione di San Pietro e la Conversione di Saulo.

Il 13 dicembre del 1549, papa Paolo III mi venne  a trovare mentre stavo dipingendo. M’ero conciato per le feste e sembrava un mascherone del carnevale con tutta la pittura su viso e sui vestiti. Lui s’arrampicò su per i ponteggi mondando i pioli delle scale come se fosse un ragazzino. Rimasi stupito per al sua vitalità ritrovata ma mi dovetti ricredere quando pochi giorni dopo morì.

Io avevo oramai completato i due affreschi centrali e già avevo realizzato i cartoni per gli altri due che non furono mai eseguiti. L’accordo che avevo sottoscritto col papa prevedeva che gli altri due cartoni fossero trasporti sulle pareti e poi affrescati da Marcello Venusti ma dopo la sua morte la decorazione della Paolina si interruppe.

È un vero peccato perché oramai era già tutto pronto e la Cappella rimase così, con solo i due affreschi che disegnai e dipinsi io. Purtroppo dei cartoni non dipinti a voi non è arrivata neanche una briciola…chissà dove sono finiti!

The frescos of the Pauline Chapel

The history and stories related to the frescoes in the Pauline Chapel are not as popular as those related to the most famous Sistine Chapel.

Who knows why … yet to make those two frescoes I spit out the blood. I was already sick and my kidney stones left me no respite. In the days when I was well I climbed up the scaffolding and painted from dawn to dusk. Sometimes I continued making light with braziers and I was able to finish large portions of fresco.

When my health turned its back on me, I was forced to go to bed for several days in a row and there was no way to carry out the work commissioned to me.

Finally, however, the crucifixion of St. Peter and the Conversion of Saul ended.

On December 13, 1549, Pope Paul III came to see me while I was painting. I had tanned for the holidays and looked like a carnival mask with all the painting on my face and clothes. He climbed up the scaffolding cleaning the ladder rungs as if he were a kid. I was amazed at his newfound vitality but I had to think again when he died a few days later.

I had now completed the two central frescoes and had already made the cartoons for the other two that were never performed. The agreement that I had signed with the Pope foresaw that the other two cartoons would be transported to the walls and then frescoed by Marcello Venusti but after his death the decoration of the Pauline was interrupted.

It is a real pity because everything was already ready and the Chapel remained like this, with only the two frescoes I drew and painted. Unfortunately, the unpainted cartoons you didn’t even get a crumb … who knows where they ended up!
