In entrambi i casi l’amore continua a consumare chi ama.

chi ’l fugge e scaccia sempre

Né contro all’alte e nuove
bellezze in donna altera
ha forza altro riparo
che schivi suo disdegno o suo mercede.
Io giuro a chi nol crede,
sol mi difende e scampa chi m’uccide.

The fear of death saves the soul

When I wrote these verses, I didn’t just want to discuss death. I wanted to recount the battle every man wages within himself, torn between the fear of the end and the desire for what comes after.

Earthly love, with all its strength, can become a prison. Yet there is a fear greater than love itself: the fear of death. But that very fear, if embraced and not rejected, becomes the path to salvation.

If we stopped running away from death

Many spend their lives trying not to think about death. They banish it from their minds as if it were an enemy to be avoided. I believe the opposite.

If man left the fear of death where it was born, without constantly trying to stifle it, he would learn to live differently. The awareness of our fragility makes each day more precious and prevents the heart from getting lost in illusions destined to vanish.

Those who forget that they are mortal often become slaves to their passions.

Love would become even more cruel.

If this thought of the end did not exist, Love would exercise an even more ferocious dominion over the human heart.

Even a noble, steadfast, and generous heart would be tested with ever more powerful weapons. Earthly love, in fact, knows infinite forms of torment: desire, anticipation, hope, jealousy, distance.

It is a force capable of shaping the soul like fire does marble or metal.

My soul already looks beyond

But I carry within me a different certainty.

My soul does not belong only to this earth. It looks beyond, toward heaven, where I finally hope to find true joy through death and the grace of God.

This is why the fear of death takes on a new meaning. It is not merely fear of the end, but a constant reminder of the ultimate goal.

It is the thought that surpasses all other fears.

No defense against such lofty beauty

However, there is another battle. When the heart encounters an extraordinary, noble, and almost miraculous beauty, every defense falls.

The haughty woman I describe is the very image of a beauty so perfect it becomes inaccessible.

There are no weapons against her.

Even her contempt hurts as much as her benevolence. If she rejects, the heart aches. If she grants hope, it fuels an even more painful desire.

In both cases, love continues to consume those who love.

A truth hard to believe

The woman laughs at my tears and remains indifferent to my pain. Yet the only force capable of saving me from her is precisely the one all men fear.

It is death.

Only that which can kill the body can also free the soul from the chains of earthly passion.

The freedom born from limitation

In this madrigal, I do not celebrate death but the awareness of human limitation.

When we understand that everything earthly is destined to end, even love changes. It does not become less intense, but finds its rightful measure.

Hope is not extinguished in death: through divine grace, it is transformed into the promise of eternal joy.

And this is why I continue to believe that the fear of death, rather than being our worst enemy, can become the wisest teacher of our lives.

Se ’l timor della morte
chi ’l fugge e scaccia sempre

Né contro all’alte e nuove
bellezze in donna altera
ha forza altro riparo
che schivi suo disdegno o suo mercede.
Io giuro a chi nol crede,
sol mi difende e scampa chi m’uccide.
