Il 1° dicembre del 1455 il grande artista Lorenzo Ghiberti, “artefice del cui raro sapere attestano le porte insuperate del Battistero”, come sta scritto sul suo sepolcro nella basilica di Santa Croce a Firenze, passò a miglior vita.

Firenze accolse la nascita e la morte del Ghiberti tenendolo tra le braccia. Riconosciuto come uno dei più grandi artisti del bronzo del Quattrocento, si formò a bottega come orafo mostrando un eccellente ingegno per la modellazione e poi per la fusione. Basti infatti pensare ai suoi mirabili San Matteo e San Giovanni, considerato la prima scultura a cera persa del Rinascimento per rendersi quanto il Ghiberti fosse un grande bronzista.

La sua maggior fama però è dovuta al suo capolavoro universalmente riconosciuto come tale: la Porta del Paradiso. Gli fu commissionata il 2 gennaio del 1425 dall’Arte di Calimala e sarebbe divenuta la terza porta del Battistero di San Giovanni di Firenze.

Servirono 27 anni di duro lavoro per portare a termine quell’imponente opera e Ghiberti era ben consapevole di aver realizzato un vero e proprio capolavoro tanto da scrivere nei suoi Commentari “è la più singolare opera che io abbia prodotta: e con ogni arte e misura et ingegno è stata finita”.

Come dargli torto? La modestia in questi casi è irreale. Ghiberti era ben conscio di quanto sapesse fare e ultimato il portone non poté altro che essere soddisfatto di quel regalo fatto all’intera umanità per i secoli a seguire.

Si narra che Ghiberti fosse talmente meticoloso che, pur avendo decine di assistenti, rifiniva personalmente molti dettagli minutissimi, convinto che ogni elemento dovesse essere perfetto.

December 1, 1455: Ghiberti Dies

On December 1, 1455, the great artist Lorenzo Ghiberti, “a craftsman whose rare skill is attested by the unsurpassed doors of the Baptistery,” as is written on his tomb in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, passed away.

Florence welcomed Ghiberti’s birth and death, holding him in its arms. Recognized as one of the greatest bronze artists of the 15th century, he trained as a goldsmith, demonstrating an excellent talent for modeling and then casting. One need only consider his marvelous Saints Matthew and John, considered the first lost-wax sculpture of the Renaissance, to understand Ghiberti’s greatness as a bronze artist.

His greatest fame, however, is due to his universally recognized masterpiece: the Gates of Paradise. It was commissioned on January 2, 1425, by the Arte di Calimala and would become the third door of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence.

It took 27 years of hard work to complete this imposing work, and Ghiberti was well aware of having created a true masterpiece, so much so that he wrote in his Commentaries, “It is the most singular work I have produced: and with every art, measure, and ingenuity it was finished.”

How can you blame him? Modesty in these cases is unreal. Ghiberti was well aware of his abilities, and once the door was completed, he could not help but be satisfied with this gift to all of humanity for centuries to come.
