“Ora col sepolcro di Papa Giulio, si apprestava a vincere l’idea stessa della morte con un popolo intero di giganti, di profeti membruti e solenni scaturiti dalle montagne bianche, di geni e di prigioni, che avrebbero offerto lo spettacolo vario e solenne di una stirpe sovrumana. Ma da questa medesima ebbrezza demiurgica sarebbero nati i primi temi della disperazione“. Coì scrisse nella bellissima biografia ‘Vita di Michelangiolo’ Giovanni Papini.

Vero è che Papini scrisse col senno di poi e io, quando accettai la commissione della tomba di papa Giulio II della Rovere, non ebbi chiaro fin da subito a quante tribolazioni sarei andato incontro.

Fu la tragedia della mia vita quella. La commissione che per più anni mi tenne i polsi legati e la mente incasinata. Con gli eredi del pontefice sempre a tenermi il fiato sul collo, a farmi pressione affiché portassi a termine quel lavoro e gli altri papi, i successori, che mi commissionavano altre robe e non potevo certo dirgli di no.

Prosegue Papini: “Tutta l’umanità era orfana, nana e deforme: era giunta l’ora di dare modello plastico di un’altra umanità, tutta bella, tutta forte e padrona, che aiutasse l’umanità di carne a superare e a redimere sé stesa. L’uomo del Rinascimento, in persona del Buonarroti, diventava collaboratore e quasi rivale d’Iddio… Michelangelo riprendeva, con lo scalpello, il discorso lasciato interrotto da Pico della Mirandola col suo De Hominis Dignitate”.

Di quella grandezza però ne pagai le conseguenze. Niente si guadagna senza perdere qualcos’altro. Spesi una vita per l’arte e quel progetto della tomba mi consumò come una candela.

“Meglio m’era nei primi anni che io mi fussi messo a fare zolfanelli ch’io non starei in tanta passsione. Io mi truovo aver perduto tutta la mia giovinezza, legato a questa sepoltura”.

But I paid the consequences of that greatness. Nothing is gained without losing something else. I spent a lifetime for art and that project of the tomb consumed me like a candle.
