Cappella Sistina: gli Antenati di Cristo
Al di sopra dei tanti papi affrescati dai pittori quattrocenteschi, volli affrescare nelle vele e nelle lunette della volta le quaranta generazioni che precedettero la venuta di Cristo.
Da Abramo a Giuseppe, non manca proprio nessuna delle figure citate in apertura del Vangelo di Matteo. Sembra quasi che tutti quei personaggi permangano in uno stato di malinconica attesa del Messia.
I gruppi familiari che affrescai non sono altro che la continuità della discendenza eletta.
Nelle vele si susseguono le otto generazioni che intercorrono tra Sem e Abramo ovvero Arpacsad, Selach, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serung, Nacor e Terach.
La lettura delle lunette e delle vele deve essere fatta a partire dall’altare e prosegue esattamente a zig zag tra una parete e l’altra fino alla porta d’entrata. Nell’ultima lunetta si trovano infatti proprio San Giuseppe con Maria e Gesù Bambino.
Mi preme dire che le lunette di inizio, quelle che poi alla fine dipinsi temporalmente per ultime, le cancellai io stesso per far posto al Giudizio Universale sulla parete dell’altare.

Sistine Chapel: The Ancestors of Christ
Above the many popes frescoed by fifteenth-century painters, I wanted to fresco in the vault’s rib vaults and lunettes the forty generations that preceded the coming of Christ.
From Abraham to Joseph, none of the figures mentioned at the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew are missing. It almost seems as if all those characters remain in a state of melancholy waiting for the Messiah.
The family groups that I frescoed are nothing other than the continuity of the chosen lineage.
In the rib vaults, the eight generations that occur between Shem and Abraham follow one another, namely Arpacsad, Selach, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serung, Nahor and Terah.
The reading of the lunettes and rib vaults must be done starting from the altar and continues exactly in a zigzag between one wall and the other up to the entrance door. In fact, in the last lunette, we find Saint Joseph with Mary and Baby Jesus.
I would like to say that I myself erased the initial lunettes, the ones that I then painted last in time, to make room for the Last Judgement on the altar wall.
