Quando Pietro Rosselli mi difese a spada tratta dinanzi a Giulio II
In una lettera scritta il 10 maggio del 1506, Pietro Rosselli, un mio caro amico architetto che da tempo lavorava alle dipendenze di papa Giulio II, volle riferirmi il contenuto di una conversazione che aveva avuto luogo tra il pontefice e il Bramante, in merito alla decorazione della Cappella Sistina.
Di fatto Bramante stava instillando il dubbio, forzando la mano, che io non avessi affatto intenzione di ubbidire al pontefice e che non avessi avuto sufficiente coraggio per mettermi al lavoro su un affresco grandioso che avrebbe ricoperto tutta la volta della Sistina.
A detta del Bramante, un lavoro simile, sarebbe stato troppo complicato per me. Avrei dovuto realizzare figure molto in alto, viste di scorcio: una cosa assai più complessa rispetto a una pittura murale realizzata ad altezza d’occhi.
Il Rosselli in quell’occasione mi difese a spada tratta: “Santo Padre, lui non parlò mai a Michelagnolo, e quelo v’àne deto da ora, se li è vero volio mi moziate e’ capo; chè lui no’ li parlò mai a Michelagnolo, e credo che lui tornerà à ogni modo, quando la vostra Santità vorà”.
Bramante provò a sottrarmi quel lavoro: la nostra rivalità, o meglio, il suo odio nei miei confronti emerse in diverse occasioni. C’è da dire anche che Bramante volentieri avrebbe voluto che il papa affidasse la commissione al suo amico Raffaello, assai più giovane di me.

When Pietro Rosselli defended me to the hilt before Julius II
In a letter written on May 10, 1506, Pietro Rosselli, a dear architect friend of mine who had long been employed by Pope Julius II, wanted to tell me the content of a conversation that had taken place between the pontiff and Bramante, regarding the decoration of the Sistine Chapel.
In fact, Bramante was instilling doubt, forcing my hand, that I had no intention of obeying the pontiff at all and that I did not have enough courage to start working on a grandiose fresco that would cover the entire vault of the Sistine Chapel.
According to Bramante, a similar work would have been too complicated for me. I would have had to create figures very high up, seen from a foreshortened angle: something much more complex than a mural painted at eye level.
Rosselli defended me tooth and nail on that occasion: “Holy Father, he never spoke to Michelangelo, and what I have told you from now on, if it is true, will move me to the head; because he never spoke to Michelangelo, and I believe that he will return in any case, when Your Holiness wants”.
Bramante tried to take that job away from me: our rivalry, or rather, his hatred towards me emerged on several occasions. It must also be said that Bramante would have gladly wanted that job to be entrusted to his friend Raphael, much younger than me.
