Bernini: il progetto della tomba di Pimentel, a Roma
Sono tanti i capolavori presenti all’interno della Chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva a Roma: dal mio Cristo Portacroce che tanto mi fece penare agli affreschi di Filippino Lippi ma non solo.
È possibile infatti ritrovarsi faccia a faccia con il raffinato monumento funebre che Gian Lorenzo Bernini progetto per il cardinale Domenico Pimentel.
Pimentel era un domenicano spagnolo nato a Segovia e vescovo di Cordova. Era stato nominato cardinale a Roma nel 1652 da papa Innocenzo X, ricevendo il titolo di San Silvestro in Capite. Fu successivamente ambasciatore di Filippo IV e di Urbano VIII e dopo la sua morte avvenuta nel 1653, per sua volontà, fu sepolto in Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
Dopo la sua dipartita dal vostro mondo, fu commissionato al Bernini il progetto della tomba. Sebbene l’impianto sia dell’artista barocco, l’esecuzione delle sculture fu affidata a tre scultori che lavoravano nello studio del Bernini: Ercole Ferrata, Antonio Raggio e Antonio Mari.
L’impianto monumentale presenta le quattro figure allegoriche della Sapienza, della Fede, Carità e Giustizia che siedono ai piedi del sarcofago in cui riposano le spoglie del cardinale.
Lo stesso è sormontato dalla figura inginocchiata e a mani giunte di Pimentel.
Nello specifico, la scultura del cardinale è opera del Ferrata mentre l’allegoria della Fede che si tiene le mani con capo a destra, è di Giovanni Antonio Mari. Infine la Carità assieme ai due bambini fu realizzata da Antonio Raggi.

After his departure from your world, Bernini was commissioned to design the tomb. Although the structure is by the Baroque artist, the execution of the sculptures was entrusted to three sculptors who worked in Bernini’s studio: Ercole Ferrata, Antonio Raggio and Antonio Mari.
The monumental structure features the four allegorical figures of Wisdom, Faith, Charity and Justice who sit at the foot of the sarcophagus in which the remains of the cardinal rest. The same is surmounted by the kneeling figure with clasped hands by Pimentel.
Specifically, the sculpture of the cardinal is the work of Ferrata while the allegory of Faith holding her hands with her head to the right is by Giovanni Antonio Mari. Finally, Charity together with the two children was created by Antonio Raggi.
