Sculpture of the day: Pope Innocent X Pampilj by Bernini

The sculpture of the day that I am proposing to you today are actually two versions of the same subject: the busts of Pope Innocent X Pampilj sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

The two busts were sculpted by the artist on commission from the pope, born Giovanni Battista Pamphilij on the threshold of the jubilee of 1650

Both versions are kept in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome and, like the busts of Scipione Borghese always sculpted by Bernini, also in this case the artist found himself having to create a second sculpture since the first revealed the presence of a black hair crossing the pope’s beard from side to side.

The first sculpted version of the bust is located in the first arm of the Gallery while the second was placed in a dressing room, in close dialogue with the portrait of Innocent X by Velàzquez.

Bernini wanted to give the pontiff’s face a lively expressiveness. The oval of the elongated face, the accentuated expression lines, the gaze turned upwards make this sculpture pulsating, alive, as the great Gian Lorenzo used to do.

The fold of the mozzetta as well as the buttons that seem not to want to stay in place enliven this work.

The pope wanted to be immortalized as a great organizer and give the idea of being able to set up one of the most significant Jubilees ever.

For the moment, your Michelangelo Buonarroti greets you by making an appointment for the next posts and on social media.
