La mia religiosità interpretata da Tolnay
Charles de Tolnay, lo storico dell’arte che dedicò gran parte della sua vita allo studio della mia esistenza e dei miei lavori, ebbe modo di ragionare a lungo sopra la mia spiritualità, legandola indissolubilmente alla vicinanza che ebbi con Vittoria Colonna.
Senza dubbio gli studi di Charles de Tolnay non possono essere trascurati e sono un punto di riferimento fondamentale per tutti coloro che si approcciano allo studio della mia esistenza.
Tolnay seppe riassumere in poche righe la mia spiritualità, in rapporto proprio con la mia carissima amica Vittoria Colonna.
“Non è improbabile che sia stata Vittoria Colonna a svegliare in Michelangelo la coscienza del peccato ed a suscitare in lui tutte le preoccupazioni sulla Salvazione dell’anima. Vittoria Colonna conobbe, probabilmente per mezzo di Juanes de Valdés, la dottrina della giustificazione per la sola fede, e può ben darsi che sia stata lei a farla conoscere a Michelangelo, il quale ne rimase profondamente colpito. In parecchie delle sue tarde poesie è possibile rintracciare allusioni ad una tale dottrina.
Questo non vuol dire, però, che l’artista avesse rinunciato alle opere buone giacché, per tutta la vita, egli aiutò sempre i bisognosi con doni ed elemosine. Ed era anche sua abitudine di mandare denaro a suo padre o al suo fratello prediletto Buonarroto a Firenze perché facessero dire delle messe per l’anima sua”, così scrisse Charles de Tolnay.
La data dell’inizio della nostra amicizia è stata a lungo studiata e fatta risalire a diversi anni: 1533, 1536 e 1538. Al momento l’arco di tempo che viene preso in considerazione si è ristretto tra il 1536 e il 1538.
Quello che è sicuro è che nel 1538 già ci frequentavamo assiduamente e ci conoscevamo bene come riportano i Dialoghi di Francisco de Hollanda, risalenti all’autunno del 1538.

Charles de Tolnay, the art historian who dedicated much of his life to the study of my existence and my works, had the opportunity to think at length about my spirituality, inextricably linking it to the closeness I had with Vittoria Colonna.
Without a doubt, Charles de Tolnay’s studies cannot be overlooked and are a fundamental point of reference for all those who approach the study of my existence.
Tolnay was able to summarize my spirituality in a few lines, in relation precisely to my dear friend Vittoria Colonna.
“It is not unlikely that it was Vittoria Colonna who awakened Michelangelo’s awareness of sin and aroused in him all his concerns about the Salvation of the soul. Vittoria Colonna learned, probably through Juanes de Valdés, the doctrine of justification by faith alone, and it may well be that it was she who introduced it to Michelangelo, who was deeply impressed by it. In several of his late poems it is possible to trace allusions to such a doctrine.
This does not mean, however, that the artist had renounced good works since, throughout his life, he always helped the needy with gifts and alms. And it was also his habit to send money to his father or his favorite brother Buonarroto in Florence so that they could have masses said for his soul”, wrote Charles de Tolnay.
The date of the beginning of our friendship has been studied for a long time and traced back to different years: 1533, 1536 and 1538. At the moment the time frame that is taken into consideration has been narrowed down to between 1536 and 1538. What is certain is that in 1538 we were already frequenting each other assiduously and knew each other well as reported in the Dialogues of Francisco de Hollanda, dating back to the autumn of 1538.
