Il Tabernacolo dell’Orcagna è un capolavoro dal gusto gotico. Si eleva per undici metri e la complessità della lavorazione del marmo di Carrara, la ricchezza delle decorazioni in mosaico e smalti colorati, lascia sempre stupefatto chi ha modo di vederlo di persona.

Quei pinnacoli che si allungano verso gli affreschi della volta caratterizzati da un fondo blu lapislazzuli e i bassorilievi che raccontano storie mariane, lo rendono un’opera straordinaria.

La storia del Tabernacolo dell’Orcagna

Il grande Tabernacolo fu commissionato ad Andrea di Cione, più noto come l’Orcagna, dalla potente Confraternita della Madonna di San Michele in orto e realizzato dall’artista in un arco di tempo di dieci anni, tra il 1349 e il 1359.

L’opera fu pensata per custodire una venerata tavola di Bernardo Daddi raffigurante la Madonna col Bambino.

L’Orcagna realizzò un grande complesso scenografico in marmo bianco di Carrara, arricchito con il verde di Prato, il rosso di Cintoia, smalti colorati e motivi dorati.

I dettagli del tabernacolo

L’opera è grandiosa, imponente, ma l’Orcagna non volle lasciare nulla al caso e curò ogni singolo dettaglio.

Osservando sia il fronte che il retro del Tabernacolo, si possono apprezzare valve di conchiglia scolpite nel marmo, rose, rilievi a forma di stella: sono tutti attributi mariani.

I bassorilievi presenti raffigurano le Virtù e storie di Maria mentre il retro è decorato da un bassorilievo che narra il Transito e l’Assunzione della Vergine.

Nella parte retrostante, al di sotto delle narrazioni dell’Assunzione in Cielo della Vergine con la consegna della cintola a San Tommaso, ovvero quella che si più vedere anche direttamente da Via dei Calzaiuoli, è presente la firma dell’artista con la dicitura ARCHI MAGISTER e l’anno in cui ultimò il complesso, il 1359.

L’intera opera è un inno alla figura della Madonna, vista come modello di virtù e di salvezza.

La scala segreta nel Tabernacolo dell’Orcagna

Nella zona in cu l’Orcagna firmò l’opera si trova nascosta una porta in legno assai piccola che finisce per passare inosservata.

Vi si accede da un cancello minuto ed era la via d’accesso che consentiva all’artista di salire fino alla cupola che sovrasta l’opera, per controllare dall’alto i lavori ma anche per raggiungere la parte più elevata del complesso monumentale.

Dalla porta inizia una scala a chiocciola ripidissima e stretta che non è accessibile al pubblico per ragioni di sicurezza. Durante l’ultimo restauro terminato a inizio del 2024, la scala è stata adoperata dagli addetti ai lavori per effettuare interventi all’interno della struttura e controllare la sommità del Tabernacolo.

The Orcagna Tabernacle and the secret staircase

The Orcagna Tabernacle is a masterpiece with a Gothic flavour. It rises eleven metres and the complexity of the Carrara marble workmanship, the richness of the mosaic decorations and coloured enamels always amazes those who have the opportunity to see it in person.

Those pinnacles that extend towards the frescoes of the vault, characterised by a lapis lazuli blue background and the bas-reliefs that tell Marian stories, make it an extraordinary work.

The history of the Orcagna Tabernacle

The great Tabernacle was commissioned to Andrea di Cione, better known as Orcagna, by the powerful Confraternity of the Madonna di San Michele in Orto and created by the artist over a period of ten years, between 1349 and 1359.

The work was designed to house a venerated panel by Bernardo Daddi depicting the Madonna and Child.

Orcagna created a large scenographic complex in white Carrara marble, enriched with Prato green, Cintoia red, colored enamels and golden motifs.

The details of the tabernacle

The work is grandiose, imposing but Orcagna did not want to leave anything to the house and took care of every single detail. Observing both the front and the back of the Tabernacle you can appreciate shell valves carved in the marble, roses, star-shaped reliefs: they are all Marian attributes.

The bas-reliefs present depict the Virtues and stories of Mary while the back is decorated with a bas-relief that narrates the Transit and the Assumption of the Virgin.

In the back, below the narratives of the Assumption of the Virgin into Heaven with the delivery of the belt to Saint Thomas, which can also be seen directly from Via dei Calzaiuoli, there is the artist’s signature with the words ARCHI MAGISTER and the year in which he completed the complex, 1359.

The entire work is a hymn to the figure of the Madonna, seen as a model of virtue and salvation.

The secret staircase in the Orcagna Tabernacle

In the area where Orcagna signed the work, a very small wooden door is hidden that ends up going unnoticed. It is accessed by a small gate and was the access route that allowed the artist to climb up to the dome that overlooks the work, to control the work from above but also to reach the highest part of the monumental complex.

From the door begins a very steep and narrow spiral staircase that is not accessible to the public for safety reasons. During the last restoration completed at the beginning of 2024, the ladder was used by workers to carry out interventions inside the structure and check the top of the Tabernacle.
