The study of two nudes for the Sistine Chapel vault
What I am proposing to you today is a sheet belonging to the Casa Buonarroti collection on which I traced in black pencil the study of two nudes that I would later fresco in the Sistine Chapel vault.
The largest figure, which occupies almost the entire space of the sheet, sits on a stone cube and is in some way attributable to the nude to the left of the prophet Daniel, as Steinmann also interpreted him more than a century ago.
In the frescoed portion, however, the nude has a slightly different pose both in the posture of the arms and of the head.
The lower drawing is more difficult to trace back to some portion of the fresco in the Sistine Chapel because it is much more summary. Hirst suggested that it could be a preliminary study to be traced back to the female figures in the lunettes in which I frescoed the ancestors of Christ while Berenson doubted that it could be something traced by my hand.
For now, yours ever Michelangelo Buonarroti bids you farewell, making an appointment to see you in the next posts and on social media.
