Arriva in Italia per la prima volta il celebre dipinto ‘La Promenade‘ di Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Nel contesto delle celebrazioni dei 150 anni dalla nascita dell’Impressionismo, dal 1° settembre al 15 dicembre 2024, la Fondazione Magnani-Rocca di Mamiano di Traversetolo a Parma, esporrà La Promenade di Pierre-Auguste Renoir, uno dei quadri più affascinanti dell’artista francese.

Prestata dal J. Paul Getty Museum di Los Angeles, l’opera sarà esposta alla Villa dei Capolavori insieme alle opere di Monet, Cézanne e ai due Renoir della collezione permanente, che rappresentano il più ricco e importante nucleo di pittura francese del periodo impressionista visibile in Italia.

Eseguito nel 1870, La Promenade è considerato uno degli esiti più alti della produzione di Renoir, anticipando il movimento impressionista, nato ufficialmente il 15 aprile 1874 con la prima mostra dei giovani artisti Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Morisot e Renoir.

La simbologia della luce e la tecnica pittorica di Renoir

La luce del sole screziata illumina la radura boscosa. Il giovane scosta il fogliame per aprire la strada alla fidanzata.

Lei gira la testa di lato in segno di modestia, forse esitante nel seguirlo più lontano nel bosco. Nella Promenade entrambe le figure sono cruciali per la scena, ma sono trattate in modo molto diverso. Mentre i verdi appena colpiti dalla luce nell’angolo in alto a destra illuminano la figura scura dell’uomo, ben illuminata e vestita di bianco la donna è il fulcro dell’immagine. Molto probabilmente si tratta di Lise Tréhot che fu la modella preferita e la compagna di Renoir durante gli anni Sessanta del XIX secolo e appare in molte delle sue opere di quel periodo.

La Grisette e il Canotier: il racconto di una mitologia bohémien

Il dipinto raffigura una scena di vita quotidiana e i personaggi sono ben riconoscibili socialmente. Il canotier si presenta come un piccolo borghese, appartenente alla classe medio-bassa e la sua compagna come una delle famose grisettes, le ragazze di buon cuore comuni nella mitologia della vita bohémien parigina, interessate ai bei giovani per il loro fascino, non per i loro soldi. Parigini in gita romantica insomma, che evocano il mondo dei piaceri fugaci, dove le restrizioni sociali sono allentate nel contesto di una natura libera.

Stilisticamente La Promenade è un omaggio agli artisti precedenti che Renoir ammirava molto come Watteau e Fragonard. Ma a differenza delle immagini di seduzione create dai suoi predecessori, quella di Renoir è una immagine istantanea catturata con spontaneità: due giovani immersi nella natura, forse in un parco, non in posa sullo sfondo di un atelier.

In questi termini la tecnica di La Promenade ne fa uno dei primi veri quadri impressionisti.

Aperto anche 1° novembre e 8 dicembre. Lunedì chiuso.

Ingresso: € 15 valido anche per le Raccolte permanenti, la mostra ‘Il Surrealismo e l’Italia’ dal 14 settembre e il Parco romantico – € 13 per gruppi di almeno quindici persone – € 5 per le scuole e sotto i quattordici anni. Il biglietto comprende anche la visita libera agli Armadi segreti della Villa. Per meno di quindici persone non occorre prenotare, i biglietti si acquistano all’arrivo alla Fondazione.

For the first time in Italy ‘La Promenade’ by Renoir

For the first time in Italy, the famous painting ‘La Promenade‘ by Pierre-Auguste Renoir arrives.

In the context of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the birth of Impressionism, from 1 September to 15 December 2024, the Fondazione Magnani-Rocca in Mamiano di Traversetolo in Parma, will exhibit La Promenade by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, one of the most fascinating paintings by the French artist.

On loan from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the work will be exhibited at the Villa dei Capolavori together with works by Monet, Cézanne and the two Renoirs from the permanent collection, which represent the richest and most important nucleus of French painting from the Impressionist period visible in Italy.

Painted in 1870, The Promenade is considered one of Renoir’s finest achievements, anticipating the Impressionist movement, which officially began on April 15, 1874, with the first exhibition of the young artists Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Morisot, and Renoir.

The symbolism of light and Renoir’s painting technique

The dappled sunlight illuminates the wooded clearing. The young man pushes aside the foliage to clear the way for his fiancée.

She turns her head modestly to the side, perhaps hesitant to follow him further into the woods. In The Promenade, both figures are crucial to the scene, but are treated very differently. While the greens barely touched by the light in the upper right corner illuminate the dark figure of the man, the well-lit and white-clad woman is the focus of the image. Most likely, this is Lise Tréhot, who was Renoir’s favorite model and companion during the 1860s and appears in many of his works from that period.

The Grisette and the Canotier: the tale of a bohemian mythology
The painting depicts a scene of everyday life and the characters are socially recognizable. The canotier is presented as a petty bourgeois, belonging to the lower middle class and his companion as one of the famous grisettes, the kind-hearted girls common in the mythology of Parisian bohemian life, interested in handsome young men for their charm, not for their money. Parisians on a romantic outing, in short, who evoke the world of fleeting pleasures, where social restrictions are loosened in the context of a free nature.

Stylistically, The Promenade is a tribute to previous artists that Renoir greatly admired such as Watteau and Fragonard. But unlike the images of seduction created by his predecessors, Renoir’s is an instant image captured with spontaneity: two young people immersed in nature, perhaps in a park, not posing against the backdrop of an atelier.

In these terms, the technique of La Promenade makes it one of the first true Impressionist paintings.

Entrance: €15 also valid for the Permanent Collections, the exhibition ‘Surrealism and Italy’ from 14 September and the Romantic Park – €13 for groups of at least fifteen people – €5 for schools and children under fourteen. The ticket also includes a free visit to the Secret Cabinets of the Villa. For less than fifteen people, there is no need to book, tickets can be purchased upon arrival at the Foundation.
