Venere che ordina a Cupido di tirare con l’arco di Vasse: Storia e Curiosità
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è il gruppo di Venere che ordina a Cupido di tirare con l’arco, realizzato dall’artista Louis Claude Vasse tra il 1755 e il 1750.
Un’opera raffinata che mostra figurativamente l’influenza di Venere, dea della Bellezza, sulle azioni di Cupido, dio dell’amore.
La raffinata e sensuale scultura fu commissionata all’artista dalla Direzione degli Edifici del Re nel maggio del 1749 e fu pagata a Vasse 12.500 sterline ma rimase nel laboratorio dell’artista.
L’opera successivamente fu offerta da Luigi XV a Madame Du Barry nel 1771 per decorare il suo castello di Louveciennes.
Sequestrata durante i moti rivoluzionari del 1793, fu poi trasportata fino a Versailles. In un primo momento Venere che ordina a Cupido di tirare con l’arco fu esposta al museo speciale della scuola francese e poi collocata nel Tempio dell’Amore nei giardini del Petit Trianon.
Come vedete nel corso della sua esistenza quest’opera in candido marmo subì diversi spostamenti tanto che dal 1816 al 1871 rimase a Saint-Cloud.
Il 12 marzo del 1872 entrò a far parte delle collezioni della Reggia di Versailles.
Oggi la scultura di Venere con Cupido di Vasse è ubicata presso il Dipartimento di Sculture del Medioevo, del Rinascimento e dell’Età Moderna del Museo del Louvre.

Venus ordering Cupid to shoot Vasse’s bow: History and Curiosities
The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the group of Venus ordering Cupid to shoot a bow, created by the artist Louis Claude Vasse between 1755 and 1750.
A refined work that figuratively shows the influence of Venus, goddess of Beauty, on the actions of Cupid, god of love.
The refined and sensual sculpture was commissioned from the artist by the King’s Buildings Directorate in May 1749 and was paid to Vasse 12,500 pounds but remained in the artist’s workshop.
The work was subsequently offered by Louis XV to Madame Du Barry in 1771 to decorate her castle in Louveciennes.
Seized during the revolutionary uprisings of 1793, it was then transported to Versailles. Venus ordering Cupid to shoot a bow was initially exhibited at the special museum of the French school and then placed in the Temple of Love in the gardens of the Petit Trianon.
As you can see, during its existence this work in white marble underwent several moves, so much so that from 1816 to 1871 it remained in Saint-Cloud.
On 12 March 1872 it became part of the collections of the Palace of Versailles.
Today the sculpture of Venus with Cupid by Vasse is located in the Department of Sculptures of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Modern Age of the Louvre Museum.
