La Velata di Raffaello: la sua opulenza e quel gioiello fra i capelli, dalla parte del cuore
Il dipinto del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Velata Raffaello, un capolavoro a olio su tavola realizzato dall’artista urbinate tra il 1512 e il 1515, oggi custodito nella Galleria Palatina, a Firenze.
L’opera deve il suo nome al velo che copre il capo della giovane che sta a indicare la sua condizione di donna sposata. Sebbene si sia a lungo cercato di capire chi potesse essere, la sua identità tutt’oggi rimane sconosciuta.
Il mio caro amico Giorgio Vasari ebbe modo di vedere la tavola fra le mura della casa del mercante fiorentino Matteo Botti e la cita nelle vite come il ritratto di “una sua donna la quale Raffaello amò sino alla morte che di lei fece un ritratto bellissimo, che pareva viva viva; il quale è oggi in Fiorenza appresso il gentilissimo Matteo Botti mercante fiorentino, amico e familiare d’ogni persona virtuosa, e massimamente dei pittori; tenuta da lui come reliquia per l’amore che egli porta all’arte, e particularmente a Raffaello”.
Si è pensato in principio potesse essere dunque Margherita Luti, più nota come la Fornarina, la donna amata fino all’ultimo giorno di vita da Raffaello ma l’abito così lussuoso che indossa così come i gioielli sfoggiati non sono oggetti comuni.
In virtù di ciò non è da escludere sia il ritratto su commissione di qualche nobildonna maritata.
La giovane indossa un abito in broccato di seta, con sontuose maniche bordate e foderate d’oro. La resa del tessuto è incredibile tanto che sembra sentirlo frusciare a ogni respiro della donna.
Le variazioni di bianco che adopera Raffaello e la sua tavolozza cromatica abbinati al pacato equilibrio delle forme del volto e della posa, mostrano un virtuosismo unico.
La scelta dello sfondo scuro è tutt’altro che casuale: riesce infatti in modo magistrale a far risaltare gli incarnati rosati della giovane e la stupefacente luminosità della veste.
La Velata porta al collo una preziosa collana di perle d’ambra mentre sul capo, dalla parte sinistra del cuore, sfoggia un pendente formato da un rubino a taglio quadrato con uno zaffiro dal quale pende una perla.
Questo tipo di gioiello era sovente un dono di fidanzamento o di matrimonio.
La Velata fu venduta dall’ultimo erede Botti al Granduca Cosimo II de’ Medici nel 1621 e già l’anno successivo fa la sua comparsa nell’inventario del Guardaroba di Palazzo Pitti.
Tutt’oggi la tavola è esposta nella Sala di Giove della Galleria Palatina, a Firenze.

La Velata by Raphael: her opulence and that jewel in her hair, on the side of the heart
The painting of the day that I propose to you today is the Velata Raffaello, an oil on panel masterpiece created by the artist from Urbino between 1512 and 1515, now kept in the Palatine Gallery in Florence.
The work owes its name to the veil that covers the young woman’s head which indicates her condition as a married woman. Although we have long tried to understand who she could be, her identity remains unknown today.
My dear friend Giorgio Vasari had the opportunity to see the painting within the walls of the house of the Florentine merchant Matteo Botti and mentions it in his lives as the portrait of “one of his women whom Raphael loved until his death and he made a beautiful portrait of her, that seemed alive and well; who is today in Florence with the very kind Matteo Botti, a Florentine merchant, friend and family member of every virtuous person, and especially of painters; kept by him as a relic for the love he had for art, and in particular for Raphael”.
It was initially thought that it could therefore be Margherita Luti, better known as Fornarina, the woman loved until the last day of his life by Raphael but the luxurious dress she wears as well as the jewels shown off are not common objects. By virtue of this, it cannot be ruled out that it was a commissioned portrait of some married noblewoman.
The young woman wears a silk brocade dress, with sumptuous sleeves edged and lined with gold. The performance of the fabric is incredible, so much so that you seem to hear it rustling with every breath the woman takes.
The variations of white that Raphael uses and his chromatic palette combined with the calm balance of the shapes of the face and the pose, show a unique virtuosity.
The choice of the dark background is anything but casual: in fact it manages in a masterful way to bring out the rosy complexions of the young woman and the astonishing brightness of her dress.
The Velata wears a precious necklace of amber pearls around her neck while on her head, on the left side of the heart, she shows off a pendant made up of a square-cut ruby with a sapphire from which a pearl hangs.
This type of jewel was often an engagement or wedding gift.
La Velata was sold by the last Botti heir to Grand Duke Cosimo II de’ Medici in 1621 and already the following year it appeared in the inventory of the Guardaroba of Palazzo Pitti. The panel is still exhibited today in the Jupiter Hall of the Palatine Gallery in Florence.
