Oggi torno a parlarvi di artisti contemporanei capaci di risvegliare i sensi più sopiti e di emozionare con le loro opere.

Durante i giorni scorsi, navigando in rete, mi son trovato dinanzi agli occhi il disegno di una Pietà molto diverso dalle altre che abbia avuto modo di vedere fino al momento. Una Pietà angosciosa che riesce a penetrare fin sotto pelle per non andarsene più.

Ho cercato l’artista che l’ha realizzata per porgli dieci domande: Fabio Cuffari. Ho scoperto così, che proprio dietro quest’opera c’è una storia di dolore terribile e si percepisce tutta attraverso la drammaticità di quei colori, quelle linee e quelle espressioni che segnano i volti dei due protagonisti.

Cuffari è nato in Valle d’Aosta nel 1982 ed è un artista talentuoso, eclettico e che permea ogni sua opera con tangibile inquietudine.

I disegni e i dipinti che crea affascinano per quel loro linguaggio del tutto personale ma vediamo di conoscere meglio Fabio Cuffari e la sua arte.

– Quando ha scoperto la sua passione per la pittura e il disegno?

Molto presto, ricordo che quando ero bambino ne subivo già il fascino vedendo disegnare i grandi. Disegnare mi riusciva con una certa facilità ed è stato quindi naturale da adolescente, iscrivermi all’Istituto d’Arte.

-Qual è la sua opera a cui è più legato e perché?

Senza dubbio la Pietà. È nata per una commissione che mi è stata affidata da una chiesa valdostana. La definisco un’impresa più che un semplice dipinto. Anzitutto per le dimensioni: misura 154×140 cm e non mi ero mai confrontato con un formato così grande, ho dovuto escogitare diverse soluzioni tecniche e pratiche per la realizzazione in studio e anche trovare la carta non è stato semplice.

Inoltre perché sono stati 7 mesi di lavoro intensi e sofferti. Questo dipinto porta con sé una storia che riguarda alcune circostanze personali che ho vissuto mentre dipingevo e che legheranno per sempre questo dipinto alla mia vita. La modella che interpreta Maria è mia mamma e Gesù è mio fratello minore. Ho deciso di coinvolgerla perché per me rappresenta il simbolo di maternità  più elevato che conosco insieme alla Madonna.

Volevo una grande intensità e ammetto che volevo anche rompere con il passato, non dimentichiamo che c’è molto dibattito su quale fosse la vera età di Maria alla morte di Gesù, si pensa attorno alla cinquantina, in un’epoca dove senza dubbio non si sembrava così giovanili come oggi.

Una settimana prima che finissi il dipinto mio fratello maggiore è mancato, a seguito di una lunga malattia. Quando ho accettato la commissione non si sapeva della sua malattia. Il dolore e le difficoltà che abbiamo vissuto e in ultimo la sua morte, hanno fatto vivere a mia madre una circostanza simile a quella della scena rappresentata. Credo di avere riversato in questo dipinto il massimo che potevo dare, oltre che artisticamente anche in termini di spirito, di drammaticità, di profondità e di speranza.

-Per lei è più emozionante pensare a un nuovo progetto o vedere poco a poco un lavoro concludersi sotto le sue mani?

Probabilmente pensare a un nuovo progetto, perché è qualcosa di molto eccitante, si delineano tante idee e visioni nella mia mente e provo un grande senso di libertà. Concludere un dipinto è magnifico ma implica un grande senso di disciplina e la fatica nelle fasi finali si fa sentire.

-Fra gli artisti del passato, ne ha uno che preferisce?

Sicuramente Michelangelo, per la sua poliedricità, per il suo coraggio e per la sua instancabilità. Spesso penso alla mia eredità, a cosa lascerò al mondo quando non ci sarò più, forse una delle mie riflessioni più pressanti, profonde e inquiete. Ebbene quando medito su questi aspetti, la figura di Michelangelo per me è un grande motivo di forza e di ispirazione.

– Un artista invece che sente molto distante da lei e dal suo modo di intendere l’arte?

Se parliamo sempre di grandi nomi me ne verrebbero in mente a decine, ma direi Duchamp in rappresentanza di tutto un mondo e un modo di fare che ha preso piede da lui in avanti e che ha portato alla grande confusione che abbiamo oggi nell’arte. Ovviamente la distanza non la considero sul piano della tecnica, ma degli intenti. Credo che mai come oggi ci sarebbe bisogno di interrogarsi su cosa sia arte e cosa no e quale dovrebbe essere il compito di un artista nel mondo di oggi.

-Se potesse andare adesso nelle sale di qualsiasi museo del mondo oppure a visitare una mostra, dove preferirebbe essere e perché?

Vorrei davvero essere al Kunstmuseum, a Basilea, di nuovo. Questo perché ci sono stato domenica scorsa e ho visto cose straordinarie, ma il tempo era poco e non ho potuto godere con calma di tutte le magnifiche opere esposte.

-La più grande soddisfazione professionale che abbia avuto fino al momento?

Ho avuto il privilegio di esporre al museo del Risorgimento Italiano a Torino nel mese di aprile, con una mostra personale dove tra l’altro ho presentato la Pietà. Le pitture sacre che ho esposto erano abbinate ognuna a dei profumi artistici di un brand molto noto. È stata un’esperienza straordinaria.

-Ho visto che ha una grande passione anche per l’insegnamento, chi sono in genere le persone che vengono a imparare da lei?

Devo dire che insegno a un pubblico molto eterogeneo, di tutte le età, con una prevalenza femminile schiacciante però. Credo che ragazze e donne abbiano una sensibilità e una delicatezza più spiccate verso l’arte. Spesso ai miei corsi partecipano persone che vogliono cimentarsi in qualcosa di creativo che non hanno avuto l’opportunità di fare, o che gli è stata negata. A volte vengono persone che vogliono regalarsi dei momenti rilassanti ed edificanti, altre volte persone che vogliono entrare in contatto con nuovi lati di se stessi.

Il mio compito è investigare e riuscire a fare affiorare i potenziali. Come dico sempre, ai miei corsi io sono quello che impara più di tutti.

-Progetti futuri che può dirci?

Certo. L’arte sacra mi ha ormai travolto completamente dopo la commissione per la parrocchia di Valtournenche. Sto quindi già lavorando ad un nuovo dipinto che raffigurerà una santa e poi ho in calendario altre pitture che faranno parte di un ciclo molto potente. In estate farò diversi murales e in autunno probabilmente ci sarà una nuova mostra.

-Ha sogni nel cassetto che le piacerebbe realizzare?

Mi piacerebbe raggiungere livelli molto elevati come pittore e fare circolare le mie opere e i messaggi che portano con loro in tutto il mondo. Infine francamente, togliermi lo sfizio di fare qualche concerto con il mio progetto musicale solista: The Secrets.

Ten questions to the artist Fabio Cuffari: Contemporary Painting and Drawing from Restlessness to the Sacred

Today I return to talk to you about contemporary artists capable of awakening the most dormant senses and moving with their works.

Over the past few days, while surfing the internet, I found before my eyes the drawing of a Pietà very different from the others I have had the opportunity to see up to now. An anguished Piety that manages to penetrate under the skin and never leave.

I looked for the artist who created it to ask him ten questions: Fabio Cuffari. Thus I discovered that right behind this work there is a story of terrible pain and it can all be perceived through the drama of those colours, those lines and those expressions that mark the faces of the two protagonists.

Cuffari was born in Valle d’Aosta in 1982 and is a talented, eclectic artist who permeates each of his works with tangible restlessness.

The drawings and paintings he creates are fascinating for their completely personal language but let’s get to know Fabio Cuffari and his art better.

– When did he discover his passion for painting and drawing?

Very early on, I remember that when I was a child I was already fascinated by seeing adults draw. I could draw with a certain ease and it was therefore natural as a teenager to enroll at the Art Institute.

-Which work are you most attached to and why?

Without a doubt the Pietà. It was born out of a commission entrusted to me by a church in the Valle d’Aosta. I define it as an undertaking more than a simple painting. First of all for the dimensions: it measures 154×140 cm and I had never dealt with such a large format, I had to come up with various technical and practical solutions for the production in the studio and even finding the paper wasn’t easy.

Also because they were 7 months of intense and painful work. This painting brings with it a story about some personal circumstances that I experienced while painting and which will forever link this painting to my life. The model who plays Mary is my mother and Jesus is my younger brother. I decided to involve her because for me she represents the highest symbol of motherhood that I know together with the Madonna. I wanted great intensity and I admit that I also wanted to break with the past, let’s not forget that there is much debate on what Mary’s true age was at the death of Jesus, it is thought to be around fifty, in an era where undoubtedly it looked as youthful as today.

A week before I finished the painting my older brother passed away following a long illness. When I accepted the commission, no one knew about his illness. The pain and difficulties we experienced and ultimately his death made my mother experience a circumstance similar to that of the scene depicted. I believe I have poured into this painting the best I could give, not only artistically but also in terms of spirit, drama, depth and hope.

-Is it more exciting for you to think about a new project or to see a job gradually completed under your hands?

Probably thinking about a new project, because it is something very exciting, many ideas and visions emerge in my mind and I feel a great sense of freedom. Finishing a painting is magnificent but involves a great sense of discipline and the fatigue in the final stages makes itself felt.

-Among the artists of the past, do you have one that you prefer?

Certainly Michelangelo, for his versatility, for his courage and for his tirelessness. I often think about my legacy, what I will leave to the world when I am no longer here, perhaps one of my most pressing, profound and restless reflections. Well, when I meditate on these aspects, the figure of Michelangelo is a great source of strength and inspiration for me.

– An artist who feels very distant from you and your way of understanding art?

If we always talk about big names, dozens would come to mind, but I would say Duchamp representing a whole world and a way of doing things that took hold from him onwards and that led to the great confusion we have in art today. Obviously I don’t consider the distance in terms of technique, but of intent. I believe that today more than ever there would be a need to question what is art and what is not and what the task of an artist should be in today’s world.

-If he could now go to the halls of any museum in the world or to visit an exhibition, where would he prefer to be and why?

I would really like to be at the Kunstmuseum, Basel, again. This is because I was there last Sunday and saw extraordinary things, but time was short and I couldn’t calmly enjoy all the magnificent works on display.

-The greatest professional satisfaction you’ve had so far?

I had the privilege of exhibiting at the Italian Risorgimento museum in Turin in April, with a personal exhibition where, among other things, I presented the Pietà. The sacred paintings that I exhibited were each combined with artistic perfumes from a well-known brand. It was an extraordinary experience.

-I saw that you also have a great passion for teaching, who generally are the people who come to learn from you? (Children, adults, Italians, foreigners, enthusiasts, artists….)

I must say that I teach to a very heterogeneous audience, of all ages, but with an overwhelming female prevalence. I believe that girls and women have a greater sensitivity and delicacy towards art. My courses are often attended by people who want to try their hand at something creative that they haven’t had the opportunity to do, or have been denied. Sometimes people come who want to treat themselves to relaxing and uplifting moments, other times people who want to get in touch with new sides of themselves. My job is to investigate and manage to bring out potentials. As I always say, in my courses I am the one who learns the most.

-What future projects can you tell us?

Certain. Sacred art has now completely overwhelmed me after the commission for the parish of Valtournenche. I am therefore already working on a new painting which will depict a saint and then I have other paintings on the calendar which will be part of a very powerful cycle. In the summer I will do several murals and in the autumn there will probably be a new exhibition.

-Do you have dreams that you would like to realize?

I would like to reach very high levels as a painter and circulate my works and the messages they carry with them throughout the world. Finally, frankly, to indulge in the urge to do some concerts with my solo musical project: The Secrets.
