Michelangelo, the Last Decades: inaugurata la nuova mostra al British Museum
Il British Museum questa mattina ha aperto i battenti al pubblico inaugurando la nuova mostra dedicata ai miei ultimi trent’anni di vita: Michelangelo, the Last Decades.
Senza ombra di dubbio, l’opera di punta sarà il mio grande cartone dell’Epiania, per la prima volta esposto dopo il restauro appena concluso. Alto 2,32 metri in altezza per 1,65 metri di larghezza, per ottenere quelle dimensioni dovetti unire assieme ventisei fogli di carta. Avevo realizzato quel cartone per poi trasporre in pittura dal Condivi.
La mostra inizia con il racconto della mia esistenza e della relativa produzione artistica a partire dai miei 50 anni in poi, fino all’ultimo giorno dell’esistenza che mi vide nella casa di Macel de’ Corvi a Roma, circondato dai miei affetti più cari.
“I lavori successivi mostrano un lato piuttosto diverso di lui, molto più introspettivo, molto più riflessivo. Lo vediamo più come una persona che fa i conti con questi sentimenti umani universali che tutti noi affrontiamo quando invecchiamo, cercando di valutare se hai vissuto una buona vita e meditare sugli aspetti della fede che spera lo porteranno alla salvezza”

I visitatori avranno modo di osservare da vicino alcuni dei più celebri studi per alcuni dei protagonisti del Giudizio Universale ma anche opere successive che mostrano un netto cambio di stile come la serie delle Crocifissioni.
“Quando iniziamo la mostra con i disegni per Il Giudizio Universale, questo è forse il Michelangelo che la gente si aspetta di vedere: pose molto drammatiche e stravaganti, le figure muscolose, il fascino per l’anatomia maschile.
Man mano che andiamo avanti, il suo interesse e il suo stile cambiano. Diventa leggermente più interessato all’interno spirituale delle figure che rappresenta. Le figure spesso diventano un po’ più compatte, un po’ più dense e pesanti. Allo stesso tempo , quando ha a che fare con la figura di Cristo, ad esempio, può diventare piuttosto leggera, quasi eterea.”

Nella mostra Michelangelo, the Last Decades sono presenti anche lettere mie che rendono possibile al pubblico addentrarsi nella mia esistenza.
C’è per esempio la lettera in cui scrissi al mi nipote Lionardo per rigraziarlo del vino che m’aveva inviato da Firenze o quella in cui Daniele da Volterra richiamava a Roma sempre il mi nipote perché la morte era sempre più prossima.
Il tempo passava inesorabilmente anno dopo anno ma fui capace di mantenere la mente sveglia e continuare a lavorare fino all’ultimo.
“Questa mostra chiarisce che anche dopo i 60 anni e per molto tempo, gli artisti possono rimanere incredibilmente creativi e innovativi e possono intraprendere progetti nuovi e davvero stimolanti“, ha affermato la curatrice Vowles.

The British Museum opened its doors to the public this morning, inaugurating the new exhibition dedicated to my last thirty years of life: Michelangelo, the Last Decades.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the flagship work will be my large cartoon of Epiania, exhibited for the first time after the recently completed restoration. 2.32 meters high by 1.65 meters wide, to obtain those dimensions I had to join twenty-six sheets of paper together. I had created that cartoon and then transposed it into painting by Condivi.

“The later works show quite a different side of him, much more introspective, much more reflective. We see him more as a person coming to terms with these universal human feelings that we all face as we age, trying to evaluate whether you’ve lived a good life and meditating on the aspects of faith that he hopes will lead to salvation.”
Exhibition curator Sarah Vowles explains
Visitors will have the opportunity to closely observe some of the most famous studies for some of the protagonists of the Last Judgment but also subsequent works that show a clear change in style such as the Crucifixions series.
“When we start the exhibition with the drawings for The Last Judgment, this is perhaps the Michelangelo that people expect to see: very dramatic and extravagant poses, the muscular figures, the fascination with the male anatomy.
As we move forward, his interest and his style change. He becomes slightly more interested in the spiritual interior of the figures he represents. The figures often become a little more compact, a little denser and heavier. At the same time, when he deals with the figure of Christ, for example, he can become quite light, almost ethereal.”

In the exhibition Michelangelo, the Last Decades there are also letters of mine that make it possible for the public to delve into my existence. There is, for example, the letter in which I wrote to my nephew Lionardo to thank him for the wine he had sent me from Florence or the one in which Daniele da Volterra always called my nephew back to Rome because his death was ever closer.
Time passed inexorably year after year but I was able to keep my mind awake and continue working until the end.
“This exhibition makes it clear that even into their 60s and for a long time, artists can remain incredibly creative and innovative and can take on new and truly inspiring projects,” said curator Vowles.
