Il mio celebre ritratto in mostra al British per “Michelangelo: the last decades”
A Londra sta per aprire i battenti la grande mostra dedicata agli ultimi trent’anni della mia vita: Michelangelo, the last decades.
Il British Museum proporrà al pubblico un’interessante esposizione che metterà al centro della scena il mio periodo romano che ebbe inizio nel 1534, quando lascia definitivamente Firenze per non farne più ritorno se non da morto.
L’opera di punta della mostra sarà il mio cartone dell’Epifania appena restaurato ma saranno molti i disegni esposti che arriveranno per l’occasione dai più grandi musei del mondo come il celeberrimo ritratto che mi fece Daniele da Volterra, appartenente al Teylers Museum.
Realizzato fra il 1550 e il 1551, dunque quando ancora ero in vita, in questo ritratto di Daniele Ricciarelli, o Daniele da Volterra che dir si voglia, ha saputo catturare la malinconia nei miei occhi.
Un sentimento che mai mi abbandonò per tutto i corso della vita e che meglio di altri mi identificava.
Guardando il disegno a distanza ravvicinata si nota la presenza dei fori che servirono per trasporre il disegno sull’intonaco fresco con la tecnica dello spolvero.
Il mio caro amico e assistente appoggiò quel foglio sulla parete della Cappella di Lucrezia della Rovere, ubicata all’interno della Chiesa della Trinità dei Monti a Roma, per dipingere le mie sembianze. Devo dire però che la resa pittorica non è all’altezza del disegno.
Daniele iniziò a metter mano a quell’opera nel 1550 e solo due anni più tardi lo portò a termine, facendoli assumere per l’occasione le sembianze di uno dei personaggi che, guardando negli occhi lo spettatore, indica con la mano destra la Madonna in gloria.

The great exhibition dedicated to the last thirty years of my life is about to open its doors in London: Michelangelo, the last decades.
The British Museum will offer the public an interesting exhibition which will put my Roman period at center stage, which began in 1534, when I definitively left Florence, never to return except in death.
The flagship work of the exhibition will be my recently restored cartoon of the Epiphany but there will be many drawings on display which will come for the occasion from the greatest museums in the world such as the famous portrait that Daniele da Volterra made of me, belonging to the Teylers Museum.
Made between 1550 and 1551, therefore when I was still alive, in this portrait of Daniele Ricciarelli, or Daniele da Volterra if you prefer, he was able to capture the melancholy in my eyes.
A feeling that never abandoned me throughout my life and which identified me better than others.
Looking at the drawing at close range you can see the presence of the holes which were used to transpose the drawing onto the fresh plaster with the dusting technique.
My dear friend and assistant placed that sheet of paper on the wall of the Chapel of Lucrezia della Rovere, located inside the Church of Trinità dei Monti in Rome, to paint my likeness. I must say, however, that the pictorial rendering is not up to the level of the drawing.
Daniele began to work on that work in 1550 and only two years later did he complete it, making them take on the appearance of one of the characters for the occasion who, looking into the eyes of the spectator, points with his right hand to the Madonna in glory.
