La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è l’Idealità e Materialismo scolpita dallo scultore ligure Giulio Monteverde nel 1911.

E’ un’opera che propone la filosofica contrapposizione senza tempo fra lo spirito e la materia.

L’allegoria della materia è rappresentata dall’uomo direttamente collegato alla ruota mentre la figura femminile che si eleva verso l’alto rappresenta lo spirito.

Lo scultore Giulio Monteverde era figlio di braccianti. Appena ultimati gli studi elementari, fu mandato a Genova per essere accolto nella bottega di un intagliatore. Cominciò così a lavorare il legno realizzando un gran numero di crocifissi.

A partire dal 1859 iniziò a frequentare i corsi di ornato e di figura presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti dove ebbe la possibilità di seguire anche i corsi serali tenuti dal noto scultore Santo Varni.

Monteverde giunse a Roma dopo aver vinto il pensionato di perfezionamento presso l’Accademia di San Luca, nel 1865.

All’inizio della sua carriera artistica, sposato con figli, faticò non poco a riuscire a guadagnare quel poco che gli bastava per il sostentamento.

Dopo aver dato forma all’opera Bambini che giocano con Gatto, comprata dal re del Wurttemberg, la sua fama improvvisamente esplose e guadagnò una vera e propria fortuna realizzando sculture fino agli ultimi istanti della sua vita.

La sua scultura Idealità e Materialismo è esposta presso la Galleria di Arte Moderna di Roma.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Ideality and Materialism sculpted by the Ligurian sculptor Giulio Monteverde in 1911.

It is a work that proposes the timeless philosophical contrast between spirit and matter.

The allegory of matter is represented by the man directly connected to the wheel while the female figure rising upwards represents the spirit.

The sculptor Giulio Monteverde was the son of laborers. As soon as he completed his elementary studies, he was sent to Genoa to be welcomed into a carver’s workshop. He thus began working with wood, creating a large number of crucifixes.

Starting from 1859 he began to attend ornamentation and figure courses at the Academy of Fine Arts where he also had the opportunity to follow the evening courses held by the well-known sculptor Santo Varni.

Monteverde arrived in Rome after winning the specialization pension at the Accademia di San Luca in 1865.

At the beginning of his artistic career, married with children, he struggled to earn just enough to support himself. After giving shape to the work Children Playing with Cat, bought by the King of Wurttemberg, his fame suddenly exploded and he earned a real fortune creating sculptures until the last moments of his life.

His sculpture Ideality and Materialism is exhibited at the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
