La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è il San Pietro di Donatello, realizzato dall’artista su commissione dell’Arte dei Beccai e Pesciaioli fra il 1410 e il 1412.

L’opera che oggi è custodita all’interno del Museo di Orsanmichele, era collocata in origine nelle nicchie esterne dell’omonima chiesa, ed è alta due metri e quarantatré centimetri.

San Pietro fu ritratto, alla stregua di un filosofo greco o romano, con tanto di toga e mantello panneggiato. Sostiene un libro con la mano destra mentre con la sinistra stringe le chiavi in bronzo che purtroppo non sono più quelle originali, andate perdute chissà come e chissà quando.

Il Santo volge lo sguardo verso sinistra verso via de’ Calzaiuoli come oggi fa la copia collocata al suo posto. Era stata quindi studiata dall’artista per essere apprezzata maggiormente con una vista frontale o da sinistra.

Il marmo scelto per l’opera è di qualità eccellente ed è poco poroso: caratteristiche che gli hanno permesso, nonostante la prolungata esposizione agli agenti atmosferici, di conservarsi in eccellente stato fino ad oggi.

Inoltre, proprio grazie a queste caratteristiche, non ha assorbito in modo deleterio gli oli che furono applicati sulle opere in marmo posizionate all’esterno di Orsanmichele fra il Settecento e l’Ottocento con lo scopo di far somigliare le opere scolpite a quelle realizzate in bronzo.

L’attribuzione di questo capolavoro a Donatello è da ricercare soprattutto in quanto si trova scritto nelle vite del Vasari secondo il quale era stata sì affidata a Brunelleschi ma solo Donatello l’aveva eseguita e perfezionata. Nel corso dei secoli si è messa in dubbio più volte questa attribuzione.

Al momento l’opera è attribuita a Donatello ma non sono pochi quelli che ipotizzano sia stata realizzata invece dal Brunelleschi.

Sculpture of the day: Donatello’s St. Peter

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Donatello’s Saint Peter, created by the artist on commission from the Arte dei Beccai e Pesciaioli between 1410 and 1412.

The work which is now kept inside the Orsanmichele Museum was originally placed in the external niches of the church of the same name, and is two meters and forty-three centimeters high.

Saint Peter was portrayed, like a Greek or Roman philosopher, complete with toga and draped cloak. He holds a book with his right hand while with his left he holds the bronze keys which unfortunately are no longer the original ones, they were lost who knows how and who knows when.

The Saint turns his gaze to the left towards Via de ‘Calzaiuoli as the copy placed in his place does today. It was therefore designed by the artist to be appreciated more when viewed from the front or from the left.

The marble chosen for the work is of excellent quality and is not very porous: characteristics that have allowed it, despite prolonged exposure to atmospheric agents, to remain in excellent condition to this day. Furthermore, it did not deleteriously absorb the oils that were applied to the marble works positioned outside Orsanmichele between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with the aim of making the sculpted works resemble those made in bronze.

The attribution of this masterpiece to Donatello is to be sought above all as it is written in Vasari’s lives according to which it had indeed been entrusted to Brunelleschi but only Donatello had executed and perfected it. Over the centuries this attribution has been questioned several times.

At the moment the work is attributed to Donatello but there are many who hypothesize that it was instead created by Brunelleschi.
