L’Opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione del Bambino dipinta da Lorenzo di Credi nel 1496, molto probabilmente per il convento delle Murate di Firenze.

Il centro dell’opera è occupato dal Bambino adorato dalla Madonna, da San Giuseppe e due angeli. Il Salvatore semi sdraiato su di un panno al di sopra di una fascina di spighe di grano che rimandano col pensiero al pane spezzato durante l’Ultima Cena, si porta il dito indice della mano sinistra al volto mentre guarda dritto negli occhi la Madre.

Il bue e l’asinello fanno la loro comparsa affacciandosi sulla scena da un’antica architettura. A richiamare in modo particolare l’attenzione sono le cromie scelte dal pittore e la dolcezza dei volti raffigurati.

Sullo sfondo si vedono due pastori che fanno la guardia al gregge in piena notte, sotto le stelle. Verso di loro si sta dirigendo un angelo in volo che presto gli annuncerà la lieta novella che li farà mettere in marcia per rendere omaggio al Bambino appena venuto al mondo.

Mostrano tutto il loro stupore mischiato a un moto di spavento per quella nascita Sacra.

Lorenzo di Credi era nato a Firenze nel 1436 o forse nel 1459 e morì sempre a Firenze il 12 gennaio del 1537. Fu un abile pittore, orafo e scultore stando ai documenti dell’epoca ma sono giunti fino a voi posteri solo i suoi dipinti che testimoniano le forti influenze che ebbe entrando da ragazzino nella bottega del Verrocchio, assieme al Perugino e Leonardo da Vinci.

Il dipinto dell’Adorazione col Bambino è custodito oggi presso la Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze.

The Works of Christmas: Adoration of the Child by Lorenzo di Credi

The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Adoration of the Child painted by Lorenzo di Credi in 1496, most likely for the Murate convent in Florence.

The center of the work is occupied by the Child adored by the Madonna, by Saint Joseph and two angels. The Savior, half lying on a cloth above a bundle of ears of wheat which brings to mind the bread broken during the Last Supper, brings the index finger of his left hand to his face while looking straight into the eyes of the Mother.

The ox and the donkey make their appearance, appearing on the scene from an ancient architecture. What particularly draws attention are the colors chosen by the painter and the sweetness of the faces depicted.

In the background you can see two shepherds guarding their flock in the middle of the night, under the stars. A flying angel is heading towards them and will soon announce the happy news that will make them set off, to pay homage to the Child who has just come into the world.

They show all their amazement mixed with a feeling of fear for that Sacred birth.

Lorenzo di Credi was born in Florence in 1436 or perhaps in 1459 and also died in Florence on 12 January 1537. He was a skilled painter, goldsmith and sculptor according to the documents of the time but only his paintings have come down to posterity which testify to the strong influences he had when he entered Verrocchio’s workshop as a boy, together with Perugino and Leonardo da Vinci.

The painting of the Adoration with the Child is today kept in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.
