La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è il busto del sacerdote Crise che sta pregando il dio Apollo, realizzato dall’artista francese Michel-Ange Slodtz.

Si tratta di un’opera in terracotta modellato dall’artista nel 1740 e oggi custodito in una teca all’interno del Museo del Louvre.

Il volto di Crise è modellato con un’abilità straordinaria. Il vecchio barbuto volge lo sguardo verso il cielo invocando il dio Apollo al quale è devoto.

La bocca aperta circondata dalle volute della barba e dei baffi e gli occhi così espressivi rendono il busto un vero e proprio capolavoro settecentesco.

L’artista René-Michel Slodtz, soprannominato dai suoi fratelli Michel-Ange in mio onore per sottolineare il suo talento artistico straordinario, era figliolo dello scultore e decoratore fiammingo Sébastien Slodtz che si trasferì a Parigi per lavorare a corte.

Nato a Parigi il 27 settembre 1705, Michel-Ange Slodtz conquistò il secondo Prix de Rome per la scultura nel 1724, a diciannove anni, con l’opera Gli abitanti di Sodoma colpiti da cecità.

Dal 1728 al 1736 Michel-Ange Slodtz fu pensionato dell’Accademia di Francia a Roma dove ebbe modo di approfondire la sua conoscenza dal vero dei capolavori dell’arte rinascimentale e barocca. Particolarmente appassionato dei capolavori del Bernini, si ispirò alle sue opere dando forma a diverse commissioni come il monumento funebre al direttore dell’Accademia di Francia Nicolas Vleughels per la chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi a Roma

Rientrato in terra natìa a Parigi, si mise al lavoro su diversi progetti sia in piena autonomia che coadiuvato da altri scultori come Cousteau.

Nel 1756 fu accolto nell’Academie Royale di Rouen e solo un paio di anni più tardi fu nominato dessinateur de la Chambre et du Cabinet du Roi ovvero progettista della Camera e del Gabinetto del Re

Il busto in terracotta del sacerdote di Apollo Crise è uno dei suoi massimi capolavori, noto soprattutto per l’intensità dei sentimenti che l’artista riuscì a imprimere alla materia.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the bust of the priest Chryses who is praying to the god Apollo, created by the French artist Michel-Ange Slodtz.

It is a terracotta work modeled by the artist in 1740 and today kept in a display case inside the Louvre Museum.

Chryses’ face is modeled with extraordinary skill. The old bearded man turns his gaze towards the sky invoking the god Apollo to whom he is devoted.

The open mouth surrounded by the curls of the beard and mustache and the expressive eyes make the bust a true eighteenth-century masterpiece.

The artist René-Michel Slodtz, nicknamed Michel-Ange by his brothers in my honor to underline his extraordinary artistic talent, was the son of the Flemish sculptor and decorator Sébastien Slodtz who moved to Paris to work at court.

Born in Paris on 27 September 1705, Michel-Ange Slodtz won the second Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1724, at the age of nineteen, with the work The Inhabitants of Sodom Affected by Blindness.

From 1728 to 1736 Michel-Ange Slodtz was a pensioner of the French Academy in Rome where he had the opportunity to deepen his knowledge of the masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque art from life. Particularly passionate about Bernini’s masterpieces, he was inspired by his works, giving shape to various commissions such as the funerary monument to the director of the French Academy Nicolas Vleughels for the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome.

Returning to his homeland in Paris, he created several projects both independently and with the collaboration of other sculptors such as Cousteau.
In 1756 he was accepted into the Académie Royale of Rouen and only a couple of years later he was appointed dessinateur de la chambre et du cabinet du roi.
The terracotta bust of the priest of Apollo Chryses is one of his best-known and most appreciated masterpieces precisely because of the intensity of feelings that the artist managed to impart to the material.
