Nel pomeriggio di ieri, 6 novembre 2023, due giovani eco-vandali appartenenti al movimento Just Stop Oil hanno preso a martellate lo straordinario dipinto della Venere Robeky del maestro spagnolo Diego Velàzquez custodito presso la National Gallery di Londra.

Hanna ed Harrison, rispettivamente di 22 e di 20 anni, hanno sferrato potenti martellate contro il cristallo protettivo dell’opera, a detta loro per protestare contro i recenti piani del Governo relativi alla concessione di ulteriori licenze petrolifere.

I martelli che hanno adoperato sono quelli rompivetro che si possono trovare per esempio sugli autobus o sui treni e che servono per spaccare i finestrini in casi di emergenza.

La stessa opera dipinta nel 1651 era già stata attaccata nel 1914 con una mannaia dalla suffragetta Mary Richardson nel 1914 durante una protesta contro l’arresto di Emmeline Pankhurst.

Dopo aver sferrato martellate ben assestate al cristallo, i due prima di essere fermati hanno avuto modo di dire ai presenti “Le donne non hanno ottenuto il voto votando; è tempo di fatti, non di parole. È ora di fermare il petrolio. La politica ci sta deludendo. Ha deluso le donne nel 1914 e sta deludendo anche noi adesso. Il nuovo petrolio e il gas uccideranno milioni di persone. Se amiamo l’arte, se amiamo la vita, se amiamo le nostre famiglie, dobbiamo semplicemente fermare il petrolio”.

E’ l’ultimo attacco di una serie di numerose azioni che gli eco vandali hanno sferrato contro il patrimonio artistico appartenente a tutta l’umanità.

La lunga storia di attacchi ha avuto inizio con il lancio di torta contro la Gioconda di Leonardo da Vinci e sono diventati via via sempre più aggressivi e dannosi.

I due responsabili dell’atto vandalico sono stati arrestati non appena la polizia è arrivata nella sala del museo e adesso pende su di loro l’accusa di danneggiamento criminale.

Al momento l’opera danneggiata è stata rimossa dalla parete e i restauratori lo stanno ponendo sotto esame per riscontrare eventuali danni.

Eco-vandals: Velàzquez’s Venus hammered

Yesterday afternoon, 6 November 2023, two young eco-vandals belonging to the Just Stop Oil movement took a hammer to the extraordinary painting of the Robeky Venus by the Spanish master Diego Velàzquez kept at the National Gallery in London.

Hanna and Harrison, aged 22 and 20 respectively, hit the protective glass of the work with powerful hammers, they said to protest against the Government’s recent plans to grant further oil licences.

The hammers they used are the glass breakers that can be found for example on buses or trains and which are used to break windows in emergency cases.

The same work painted in 1651 had already been attacked with a cleaver by the suffragette Mary Richardson in 1914 during a protest against the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst.

After having delivered well-aimed blows to the glass, the two, before being stopped, had the opportunity to say to those present “Women did not get the vote by voting; it’s time for actions, not words. It’s time to stop the oil. Politics is failing us. It failed women in 1914 and it is failing us now. New oil and gas will kill millions of people. If we love art, if we love life, if we love our families, we simply have to stop the oil.”

It is the latest attack in a series of numerous actions that eco vandals have launched against the artistic heritage belonging to all humanity.

The long history of attacks began with the throwing of cake at Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and have gradually become more and more aggressive and harmful.

The two responsible for the vandalism were arrested as soon as the police arrived in the museum room and the charge of criminal damage is now pending against them.

At the moment the damaged work has been removed from the wall and the restorers are examining it for any damage.
