Sta per aprire un’importante mostra dedicata alle opere più significative che raffigurano il corpo umano a partire dal periodo del Rinascimento fino al Ventesimo secolo: Michelangelo and Beyond.

L’esposizione sarà inaugurata il 14 settembre 2023 all’Albertina di Vienna e potrà essere visitata fino al 15 gennaio 2024. Proporrà al grande pubblico la potenza, il significato e la decadenza successiva di un canone estetico che avviai io stesso agli inizi del Cinquecento.

L’impatto che ebbe il modo che avevo di riprodurre il corpo umano attraverso disegni, affreschi o sculture ebbe un’influenza non da poco sugli artisti contemporanei e successivi.

Colleghi già affermati e ragazzi che iniziavano a muovere allora i primi passi nel mondo dell’arte, non perdevano l’occasione di studiare dal vero le opere mie come il cartone della Battaglia di Cascina o gli affreschi prima della volta della Sistina e successivamente quelli del Giudizio Unversale.

La riscoperta della perfezione del corpo tipica delle sculture greche e romane e l’avvio di un nuovo corso artistico ha per i secoli successivi cambiato radicalmente il modo di pensare all’anatomia umana nell’arte.

I disegni miei esposti nella mostra “Michelangelo and Beyond” saranno quelli che realizzai prima di metter mano al cartone della Battaglia di Cascina e i disegni preparatori per gli affreschi della volta della Cappella Sistina ma non solo.

Verranno affiancate alle mie opere preziosi studi grafici di Raffaello e Dürer con le loro percezioni del corpo umano. Mentre Raffaello aveva una comprensione del corpo ideale atletico ma più poetico del mio, Albrecht Dürer aveva una visione diversa del nudo umano. Dedicava maggiore attenzione alle proporzioni e alle misure, talvolta perdendo di immediatezza.

Nel percorso espositivo allestito presso la Albertina di Vienna potrete apprezzare disegni, stampe e sculture che affrontano il tema del corpo ideale nel corso dei secoli.

Sarà presente anche il bronzo dell’Ercole Farnese della collezione Liechtenstein e fra i capolavori di Rembrand i ritratti dal vero che faceva alla moglie.

Il declino del canone estetico in auge nel Rinascimento iniziò a declinare vertiginosamente fra la fine del XIX e l’inizio del XX secolo.

I nudi di Klimt propongono la bellezza nelle curve delle donne mentre al contrario, i tratti espressionisti di Schiele mostrano una contraddizione netta con i corpi che ero solito rappresentare io. con l’ideale di Michelangelo.

Michelangelo and Beyond: the exhibition of my drawings, Durer’s and Raphael’s

An important exhibition dedicated to the most significant works depicting the human body from the Renaissance period to the twentieth century is about to open: Michelangelo and Beyond.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on 14 September 2023 at the Albertina in Vienna and can be visited until 15 January 2024. It will propose to the general public the power, meaning and subsequent decadence of an aesthetic canon that I myself initiated at the beginning of the sixteenth century.

The impact that my way of reproducing the human body through drawings, frescoes or sculptures had had a significant influence on contemporary and subsequent artists.

Already established colleagues and young people who were then starting to take their first steps in the world of art, did not miss the opportunity to study my works from life such as the cartoon of the Battle of Cascina or the frescoes before the vault of the Sistine Chapel and subsequently those of the Last Judgment.

The rediscovery of the perfection of the body typical of Greek and Roman sculptures and the start of a new artistic course has radically changed the way of thinking about human anatomy in art for the following centuries.

My drawings exhibited in the “Michelangelo and Beyond” exhibition will be those I made before working on the cartoon of the Battle of Cascina and the preparatory drawings for the frescoes in the vault of the Sistine Chapel but not only.

My works will be accompanied by precious graphic studies by Raphael and Dürer with their perceptions of the human body. While Raphael had an athletic but more poetic understanding of the ideal body than mine, Albrecht Dürer had a different vision of the human nude. He paid more attention to proportions and measurements, sometimes losing immediacy.

In the exhibition set up at the Albertina in Vienna you can appreciate drawings, prints and sculptures that address the theme of the ideal body over the centuries.

There will also be the bronze of the Farnese Hercules from the Liechtenstein collection and among Rembrand’s masterpieces the life portraits he took of his wife.

The decline of the aesthetic canon in vogue in the Renaissance began to decline dramatically between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.

Klimt’s nudes propose beauty in women’s curves while on the contrary, Schiele’s expressionist features show a clear contradiction with the bodies that I used to represent. with the ideal of Michelangelo.
