La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Lesbia con il suo passero, nota anche come la Ragazza con l’uccello morto, scolpita dall’artista tedesco Johann Heinrich von Dannecker nel 1836.

Quando l’artista iniziò a modellare il gesso per quest’opera era il 1790.

Era appena rientrato in patria dopo il suo lungo soggiorno romano che gli aveva permesso di conoscere il grande Antonio Canova. Fortemente ispirato dal gusto neoclassico, non dimenticò mai per il resto della vita ciò che il maestro aveva scolpito, facendone tesoro.

Nello stesso anno aveva avuto modo di conoscere e innamorarsi di Heinrike Rapp, quella che poi diverrà la prima moglie.

Il volto dell’opera è infatti quello della donna che amava e non è da escludere che l’artista ebbe nei confronti della scultura una particolare devozione.

Dalla realizzazione del modello in gesso alla trasposizione in marmo passarono diversi anni. Solo nel 1836, quando Von Dannecker aveva 78 anni, l’opera fu portata a termine.

Fu un omaggio alla moglie scomparsa nel 1823 che mise in luce tutta l’abilità dell’artista in età avanzata, nonostante la salute cagionevole.

Tre anni prima che lo scultore passasse a miglior vita, nel 1838, il banchiere olandese Adriaan Van der Hoop lo andò a trovare nel suo studio. Van der Hoop era una delle persone più danarose del suo tempo ed era noto per essere un grande e raffinato collezionista di opere d’arte.

In quel momento Lesbia con il passero era già ultimata ma ancora si trovava nello studio dell’artista.

Il mecenate acquistò un rilievo marmoreo ma non la preziosa scultura perchè probabilmente l’artista non voleva cederla visto il fortissimo legame che aveva con quell’opera dedicata alla moglie scomparsa.

Adriaan van der Hoop infatti, dopo la morte dell’artista tornò a Stoccarda per acquistare proprio Lesbia e il suo passero per un totale di 3380,60 fiorini.

Il mecenate morì dodici anni dopo, nel 1854 e alla sua morte, lasciò in eredità l’intera collezione di dipinti e disegni, per un totale di 250 pezzi, alla città di Amsterdam a patto che fossero esposti al pubblico in un museo.

La città di Amsterdam concesse i dipinti al Rijksmuseum in prestito a lungo termine nel 1885, dove sono rimasti da allora. 

Dopo vicissitudini assai complesse e travagliate, l’opera in questione che non faceva parte del lascito dell’artista alla città di Amsterdam, è stata battuta all’asta da Sotherby’s e appartiene a una collezione privata.

Sculpture of the day: Lesbia with her sparrow by Von Dannecker

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Lesbia with her sparrow, also known as the Girl with the dead bird, sculpted by the German artist Johann Heinrich von Dannecker in 1836.

When the artist began to model plaster for this work it was 1790.

He had just returned home after his long stay in Rome which had allowed him to meet the great Antonio Canova. Strongly inspired by the neoclassical taste, he never forgot for the rest of his life what the master had carved, treasuring it.

In the same year he had got to know and fall in love with Heinrike Rapp, who would later become his first wife. The face of the work is in fact that of the woman he loved and it cannot be excluded that the artist had a particular devotion towards sculpture.

Several years passed from the creation of the plaster model to the transposition in marble. Only in 1836, when Von Dannecker was 78 years old, was the work completed.

It was a tribute to his wife who died in 1823 which highlighted all the skill of the artist in old age, despite his poor health.

Three years before the sculptor passed away, in 1838, the Dutch banker Adriaan Van der Hoop visited him in his studio. At the time Van der Hoop was one of the most wealthy people of his time and was known to be a great and refined collector of works of art.

At that moment Lesbia with the sparrow was already completed but was still in the artist’s studio. The patron bought a marble relief but not the precious sculpture because the artist probably did not want to sell it given the very strong bond he had with that work dedicated to his deceased wife.

In fact, after the artist’s death, Adriaan van der Hoop returned to Stuttgart to buy Lesbia and her sparrow for a total of 3380.60 florins.

The patron Adriaan van der Hoop died twelve years later, in 1854 and upon his death, bequeathed the entire collection of paintings and drawings, for a total of 250 pieces, to the city of Amsterdam on condition that they were exhibited to the public in a museum.

The city of Amsterdam granted the paintings to the Rijksmuseum on a long-term loan in 1885, where they have remained ever since.

After very complex and troubled vicissitudes, the work in question, which was not part of the artist’s bequest to the city of Amsterdam, was auctioned by Sotherby’s and belongs to a private collection.
