Il 28 luglio del lontano 1364 fu combattuta la Battaglia di Cascina in cui l’armata fiorentina l’ebbe vinta sulle truppe pisane.

I pisani in quello scontro, oltre a subire notevoli danni, persero un numero consistente di uomini. 

140 anni dopo, fra l’agosto e il settembre del 1504, il gonfaloniere della Repubblica Fiorentina Pier Soderini, mi affidò la realizzazione di un grande affresco per ricordare proprio quella battaglia.

“Messer Galeotto Malatesta capitano de’ Fiorentini, movendo la notte dinanzi campo Peccioli, la mattina s’accampò ne’ borghi di Cascina presso Pisa e infra il giorno per lo smisurato caldo le tre parti e più dell’oste si bagnava in Arno, quale si sciorinava al meriggio, e chi disarmandosi e in altro modo prendea rinfrescamento“

,Scrisse Filippo Villani ricordando quei fatti nel libro della Cronica.

Andare a combattere vestiti con le corazze a fine luglio era un’impresa non da poco. Provate solo per un istante il caldo che dovevano patire uomini e cavalli.

Gli uomini della truppa fiorentina, in un momento di riposo, iniziarono a spogliarsi e a mettersi a mollo nelle acque del fiume alla ricerca di un po’ di refrigerio.

Dopo poco però arrivò di corsa Manno Donati, uno dei combattenti più in vista gridando “Siamo perduti!”. Quello è il momento che scelsi di rappresentare, fra il drammatico e il farsesco.

Proprio quello è l’istante esatto che volli rappresentare sul cartone della Battaglia di Cascina, mentre i soldati colti di sorpresa iniziarono rapidamente a uscirono dall’acqua tentando di rivestire i propri corpi bagnati.

Immaginatevi quei poveri soldati disarmati e con il nemico a due passi che provano a infilarsi calzamaglie varie e l’armatura senza aver avuto il tempo di asciugarsi.

Alla fine il grande affresco per la Sala Grande di Palazzo Vecchio non lo realizzai mai. A Roma mi attendeva papa Giulio II per commissionarmi la sua grandiosa tomba e quando poi ritornai a Firenze la situazione era assai cambiata.

28 July 1364: the Battle of Cascina

On 28 July 1364 the Battle of Cascina was fought in which the Florentine army defeated the Pisan troops.

The Pisans in that clash, in addition to suffering considerable damage, lost a substantial number of men.

140 years later, between August and September 1504, the gonfalonier of the Florentine Republic, Pier Soderini, entrusted me with the creation of a large fresco to commemorate that very battle.

Going to battle dressed in armor at the end of July was no mean feat. Experience just for a moment the heat that men and horses had to endure.

The men of the Florentine troops, in a moment of rest, began to undress and soak in the waters of the river in search of some refreshment.

Shortly after, however, Manno Donati arrived running, one of the most prominent fighters shouting “We are lost!”. That is the moment that I chose to represent, between the dramatic and the farcical.

That is the exact instant that I wanted to represent on the cartoon of the Battle of Cascina, while the soldiers taken by surprise quickly began to come out of the water trying to dress their wet bodies.

Imagine those poor unarmed soldiers with the enemy close at hand trying to put on various tights and armor without having had time to dry.

In the end, I never painted the large fresco for the Great Hall of Palazzo Vecchio. In Rome Pope Julius II was waiting for me to commission his grandiose tomb and when I returned to Florence the situation had changed considerably.
