Il Museo Nazionale del Bargello, a partire dal 5 aprile fino al 4 settembre 2023, ospita i tre massimi capolavori della scultura in bronzo del Rinascimento provenienti dal Museo di Orsanmichele, chiuso per lavori.

Le tre opere in questione sono il San Giovanni Battista di Lorenzo Ghiberti, l’Incredulità di san Tommaso di Andrea del Verrocchio e il San Luca del Giambologna.

L’esposizione renderà possibile ammirare le tre opere del celebre ciclo scultoreo di Orsanmichele, trasferite presso l’antica sede del Palazzo del Podestà, ovvero il Museo Nazionale del Bargello, durante la temporanea chiusura del Complesso monumentale che proseguirà fino al 22 settembre 2023.

La chiusura è stata resa necessaria per poter effettuare lavori straordinari di restauro, messa in sicurezza, riallestimento e miglioria degli accessi, diretti da Tommaso Barni e possibili grazie ai finanziamenti straordinari legati al Piano Strategico GPBC del Ministero della Cultura.

Il Complesso di Orsanmichele è uno dei più importanti monumenti pubblici fiorentini e fa parte dei Musei del Bargello sotto la direzione di Paola d’Agostino.

Al primo piano del palazzo trecentesco, a partire dalla metà degli anni Novanta, sono custodite le opere originaliin bronzo e in marmo affiguranti i santi patroni delle Arti fiorentine, progressivamente rimosse dai tabernacoli esterni e sostituite da copie per ovvie ragioni conservative.

Le opere selezionate per l’esposizione temporanea al Bargello provengono tutte dalle edicole situate sulla facciata orientale di via de’ Calzaiuoli: il San Giovanni Battista di Ghiberti (1413-1416), la prima statua monumentale del Rinascimento, viene dal tabernacolo dell’Arte di Calimala, mentre il San Luca del Giambologna (1602) fu commissionato dall’Arte dei Giudici e dei Notai.

L’opera dello scultore fiammingo Jean de Boulogne, detto Giambologna, fino al momento non aveva mai lasciato la sede di Orsanmichele ad eccezion fatta del periodo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e in occasione del restauro del 2001.

infine, l’altra opera in bronzo in mostra al Bargello, sarà il gruppo dell’Incredulità del Verrocchio (1467-1483), scenograficamente allestito in mostra entro una nicchia sopraelevata ad una altezza prossima a quella del tabernacolo originale, rappresenta l’Università della Mercanzia.

“Questa piccola mostra focalizzata su tre grandi capolavori in bronzo mira non soltanto a rendere visibili alcune tra le più importanti statue del rinascimento, che scandiscono passaggi fondamentali del Rinascimento fiorentino, durante i lavori straordinari previsti quest’anno ad Orsanmichele ma anche a mettere in collegamento più stretto le collezioni dei Musei del Bargello, uniche nel mostrare il dominio della statuaria fiorentina in bronzo dal Quattrocento all’inizio del Seicento. Ringrazio Benedetta Matucci per aver curato la mostra arricchendola anche di tanti dati visivi e documentari che danno conto della storia singolare delle statue di Orsanmichele dal Rinascimento ad oggi”.

Ghiberti, Verrocchio and Giambologna: illustrious guests at the Bargello

The Bargello National Museum, starting from 5 April until 4 September 2023, hosts the three greatest masterpieces of Renaissance bronze sculpture from the Orsanmichele Museum, closed for renovations.

The three works in question are the San Giovanni Battista by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the Incredulity of San Tommaso by Andrea del Verrocchio and the San Luca by Giambologna.

The exhibition will make it possible to admire the three works of the famous sculptural cycle of Orsanmichele, transferred to the ancient seat of the Palazzo del Podestà, or the National Museum of the Bargello, during the temporary closure of the monumental complex which will continue until 22 September 2023.

The closure was made necessary to be able to carry out extraordinary restoration, safety, rearrangement and improvement works of the accesses, directed by Tommaso Barni and possible thanks to the extraordinary funding linked to the GPBC Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Culture.

The Orsanmichele Complex is one of the most important Florentine public monuments and is part of the Bargello Museums under the direction of Paola d’Agostino.

On the first floor of the fourteenth-century building, since the mid-1990s, the original works in bronze and marble depicting the patron saints of the Florentine arts have been kept, progressively removed from the external tabernacles and replaced by copies for obvious conservation reasons.

The works selected for the temporary exhibition at the Bargello all come from the aedicules located on the eastern façade of via de’ Calzaiuoli: Ghiberti’s St. John the Baptist (1413-1416), the first monumental statue of the Renaissance, comes from the tabernacle of the Art of Calimala, while the San Luca by Giambologna (1602) was commissioned by the guild of judges and notaries.

The work of the Flemish sculptor Jean de Boulogne, known as Giambologna, had never left the Orsanmichele site until now, with the exception of the period of the Second World War and on the occasion of the 2001 restoration.

finally, the other bronze work on display at the Bargello will be the Incredulity group by Verrocchio (1467-1483), spectacularly set up on display within a raised niche at a height close to that of the original tabernacle, representing the University of Merchandise.

“This small exhibition focused on three great bronze masterpieces aims not only to make visible some of the most important statues of the Renaissance, which mark fundamental passages of the Florentine Renaissance, during the extraordinary works planned this year in Orsanmichele but also to connect closer the collections of the Bargello Museums, unique in showing the dominance of Florentine bronze statuary from the fifteenth to the early seventeenth century.
