Un disegno in gesso rosso, acquistato da un collezionista europeo anonimo nel 2014, è stato attribuito a me in questi giorni.

Si tratta di un uomo nudo visto di schiena, con il busto e una gamba in tensione. Paul Joannides, noto esperto dei lavori miei, avrebbe ricondotto quello studio a una delle scene che affrescai nella volta della Cappella Sistina e precisamente Il Serpente di Bronzo.

Il Serpente di Bronzo si trova in uno dei quattro pennacchi con le Salvazioni di Israele del Vecchio Testamento. Nella scena dipinsi il momento in cui gli istraeliti, dopo aver bestemmiato contro Dio e Mosè, furono puniti con l’invio di serpenti velenosi.

Mosè, impietosito nel vederli morire come mosche e addolorati, forgia un serpente di bronzo: chi dopo essere stati morso dalle serpi velenose lo avesse guardato, si sarebbe salvato.

Il disegno è stato datato attorno al 1512, ovvero quando ero alle prese con le ultime scene da raffigurare nella volta della Cappella Sistina. Nello specifico, sembra che il personaggio studiato sia l’uomo nudo di schiena che si trova all’estrema destra del pennacchio.

A me lascia un po’ perplesso la resa della parte superiore della spalla destra nel disegno da quello che posso vedere dalle foto che ho al momento a disposizione. Non solo. Anche la colonna vertebrale mi insospettisce. La resa anatomica non è così precisa come invece lo è in altri miei disegni.

Vero è che era l’espressione dinamica a interessarmi più che la esatta fedeltà anatomica ma insomma, lo posso dire? Tanto lo dico comunque: non mi convince totalmente.

Prima di Joannides nessuno si era reso conto che bastasse ruotare lo studio per farlo corrispondere al dipinto della Sistina.

Guardando il disegno, sembra che la figura sia stata pensata per essere vista orizzontalmente. Non è così. Il disegno dev’essere ruotato di 90 gradi in senso orario, in questo modo coincide con la figura dell’affresco»

In una intervista rilasciata al Burlington Joannides ha inoltre riferito che esiste una sequenza di linee sul margine destro del foglio che io realizzai come promemoria dell’orientamento del foglio.

Se quel disegno realmente fosse mio sarebbe una scoperta importante. Di studi miei relativi alla volta della Cappella Sistina ne sono arrivati fino ai giorni veramente pochi. Feci bruciare dai miei assistenti un gran numero di cartoni e fogli in più di una occasione.

Ha detto Joannides all’Observer : “Per un artista della grandezza di Michelangelo, e grandezza come disegnatore, ogni nuova scoperta ha un certo livello di eccitazione. Ma questo è un disegno di Michelangelo per uno dei massimi capolavori dell’arte occidentale».

Il disegno in questione misura 15,7 per 19,3 centimetri e il proprietario è riuscito a far avere tramite un intermediario la sua foto a Joannides. Prima di questa nuova possibile attribuzione, era stato provvisoriamente affibbiato al Rosso Fiorentino.

A new drawing of mine for the Sistine Chapel discovered?

A red plaster design, purchased by an anonymous European collector in 2014, has been attributed to me these days.

It is a naked man seen in the back, with a bust and a tension leg. Paul Joannides, a well -known expert of my works, would have brought back that study to one of the scenes I frescoed in the vault of the Sistine Chapel and precisely the bronze snake.

The bronze snake is located in one of the four plumes with the salvations of Israel of the Old Testament. In the scene I frescoed the moment when the Istraelites, after having blasphemed against God and Moses, were punished with the sending of poisonous snakes.

Moses, merciless in seeing them die like flies and grieved, forge a bronze snake: who after being bitten by the poisonous snakes had looked at him would be saved.

The drawing was dated around 1512 or when I was struggling with the latest scenes to be depicted in the vault of the Sistine Chapel. Specifically, it seems that the character studied is the naked back man who is located on the far right of the Pennacchio.

To me leave a little perplexed the surrender of the upper part of the right shoulder in the drawing from what I can see from the photos I have currently available. Not only. The design of the spine is also suspicious of me. Anatomical yield is not as precise as it is in my other drawings.

It is true that it was the dynamic expression that interests me more than the exact anatomical loyalty but in short, can I say it? So much I say it anyway: it does not totally convince me.

Before Joannides no one had realized that it was enough to rotate the study to make him correspond to the painting of the Sistine.

Looking at the drawing, it seems that the figure was designed to be seen horizontally. It is not so. The drawing must be rotated 90 degrees clockwise, in this way it coincides with the figure of the fresco »

In an interview with Burlington Joannides also reported that there is a sequence of lines on the right margin of the sheet that I made as a reminder of the orientation of the sheet.

If that drawing really mine would be an important discovery. Of my studies relating to the Sistine Chapel, very few have reached the days. I burn a large number of cartoons and sheets in more than one occasion from my assistants.

Joannides at Observer said: “For an artist of Michelangelo’s greatness, and greatness as a designer, every new discovery has a certain level of excitement. But this is a design by Michelangelo for one of the greatest masterpieces of western art ».

The drawing in question measures 15.7 for 19.3 centimeters and the owner managed to have Joannides’ photo have through an intermediary. Before this new possible attribution, it had been provisionally given to the Florentine red.
