A Ferrara riapre il Palazzo dei Diamanti dopo il complesso intervento di restauro e lo fa in grande, con una mostra che si preannuncia imperdibile: “Rinascimento a Ferrara. Ercole de’ Roberti e Lorenzo Costa”.

Saranno oltre 100 le opere esposte, alcune delle quali ritornano dopo secoli per la prima volta a Ferrara da diversi musei sparpagliati per il mondo per raccontare il primo Rinascimento Ferrarese.

L’esposizione sarà accessibile ai visitatori dal 18 febbraio fino al 19 giugno del 2023. La mostra inaugurale dedicata a Ercole de’ Roberti e Lorenzo Costa non è altro che la prima tappa di un ambizioso progetto mirato ad approfondire nei prossimi anni il legame storico artistico nel periodo che inizia con il divenire della città un ducato fino agli Estensi per arrivare al diretto controllo dello Stato Pontificio.

Rinascimento a Ferrara 1471-1598 da Borso ad Alfonso II d’Este, così si chiama il nuovo progetto che sta per prendere il via a Palazzo dei Diamanti.

Ercole de’ Roberti, nato a Ferrara attorno al 1450, era il più giovane e illuminato di tutti coloro che presero parte al clima culturale che si respirava a Palazzo Schifanoia durante gli ultimi anni di governo di Borso.

Lavorò a Bologna lasciando il segno ma sicuramente fu a Ferrara che ebbe modo di trovare terreno più fertile per dare spazio alle proprie creazioni nell’ultimo decennio della sua esistenza, trascorso al servizio della corte.

I visitatori potranno seguire la carriera di Ercole attraverso oltre venti opere, dagli esordi alla compiuta maturità. Tra le prove giovanili saranno presenti gli scomparti del polittico Griffoni, eseguito a fianco di Francesco del Cossa, e i luminosi Ritratti di Giovanni II e Ginevra Bentivoglio che giungeranno da Washington, una commissione che sancisce il prestigio raggiunto nella vicina Bologna.

Lorenzo Costa, di dieci anni più giovane, raccolse l’eredità di Ercole de’ Roberti e ne continuò il suo stile nelle opere giovanili. Dopo il suo soggiorno bolognese però le sue opere acquisirono una maggiore morbidezza. I tempi stavano cambiando seguendo l’influenza mia, di Leonardo e di Raffaello.

La selezione di lavori di Costa in mostra prende avvio dal periodo giovanile, durante il quale il pittore è impegnato in un fruttuoso confronto con Ercole, come dimostrano le Storie degli Argonauti riunite per la prima volta. Per illustrare il Costa più classicheggiante e pacato sarà in mostra la Sacra Famiglia dal Museo di Toledo in Ohio mentre per documentare il periodo mantovano, finora meno frequentato dagli studi, interverranno la Santa Veronica del Louvre, il Ritratto di cardinale del Minneapolis Institute of Art, sino all’ultima opera nota, la Madonna e Santi della chiesa di Sant’Andrea a Mantova, datata 1525.

L’esposizione “Rinascimento a Ferrara. Ercole de’ Roberti e Lorenzo Costa”, oltre a proporre opere dei due artisti citati, li affianca a loro contemporanei quali Mantegna, Cosmè Tura, Nicolò dell’Arca, Marco Zoppo costituiranno il punto di partenza, mentre Antonio da Crevalcore, Guido Mazzoni, Boccaccio Boccaccino, Francesco Francia e Perugino.

La mostra è curata da Michele Danieli, Vittorio Sgarbi e organizzata da Fondazione Ferrara Arte (direttore Pietro Di Natale) e Servizio Musei d’Arte del Comune di Ferrara, in collaborazione con Direzione generale archeologia, belle Arti e paesaggio del Ministero della Cultura, con il patrocinio del Ministero della Cultura.

Renaissance in Ferrara: Ercole de’ Roberti and Lorenzo Costa at Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara

In Ferrara, the Palazzo dei Diamanti reopens after the complex restoration work and does so in a big way, with an exhibition that promises to be unmissable: “Renaissance in Ferrara. Ercole de’ Roberti and Lorenzo Costa”.

There will be over 100 works on display, some of which return after centuries for the first time to Ferrara from various museums scattered around the world to tell the story of the early Ferrarese Renaissance.

The exhibition will be accessible to visitors from 18 February until 19 June 2023. The inaugural exhibition dedicated to Ercole de’ Roberti and Lorenzo Costa is nothing more than the first stage of an ambitious project aimed at deepening the historical-artistic bond over the next few years in the period that begins with the city becoming a duchy up to the Estensi to arrive at the direct control of the Papal State.

Ercole de’ Roberti, born in Ferrara around 1450, was the youngest and most enlightened of all those who took part in the cultural climate that reigned in Palazzo Schifanoia during the last years of the Borso government.

He worked in Bologna leaving his mark but it was certainly in Ferrara that he was able to find more fertile ground to give space to his creations in the last decade of his existence, spent in the service of the court.

Visitors will be able to follow Ercole’s career through over twenty works, from his beginnings to his full maturity. Among the juvenile trials there will be the compartments of the Griffoni polyptych, executed alongside Francesco del Cossa, and i
luminous Portraits of John II and Ginevra Bentivoglio who will arrive from Washington, a commission that sanctions the prestige achieved in nearby Bologna.

Lorenzo Costa, ten years younger, took up the legacy of Ercole de’ Roberti and continued his style in his early works. After his stay in Bologna, however, his works acquired a greater softness. Times were changing following my influence, Leonardo’s and Raphael’s.

The selection of Costa’s works on display starts from his youthful period, during which the painter is engaged in a fruitful confrontation with Hercules, as demonstrated by the Stories of the Argonauts brought together for the first time. To illustrate the more classical and calm Costa, the Holy Family from the Toledo Museum in Ohio will be on display, while to document the Mantuan period, hitherto less frequented by studies, the Saint Veronica from the Louvre, the Portrait of a Cardinal from the Minneapolis Institute of Art, up to the last known work, the Madonna and Saints of the church of Sant’Andrea in Mantua, dated 1525.

The exhibition “Renaissance in Ferrara.
