Il busto del Bruto lo scolpii per Donato Giannotti che ne voleva fare dono al cardinale Ridolfi.

Perché il committente platealmente anti mediceo voleva proprio scolpissi chi aveva dato la prima coltellata a Giulio Cesare? Perché così voleva in qualche modo celebrare l’assassinio di Alessandro de’ Medici da parte di Lorenzino de’ Medici: un omicidio da sempre visto come una sorta di feroce protesta degli esuli fiorentini contro la tirannia medicea.

Il Bruto è un’opera mia abbastanza conosciuta sebbene non sia celeberrima ma in pochi si fermano a leggere la scritta apposta sul piedistallo.

Sulla targa ci sono incise queste parole in latino: DUM BRUTI EFFIGEM SCULPTOR DE MARMORE DUCIT/ IN MENTEM SCELERIS VENIT ET ABSTINUIT. Come sapete mai volli imparare il latino e non vi pensiate lo sappia adesso.

Mi son fatto tradurre perbenino la scritta da chi ne sa sicuramente più di me in materia e significa “Quando lo scultore stava scolpendo l’effigie di Bruto nel marmo/ gli venne in mente il crimine e si astenne dal completarla”.

Ora a me pare assai strano che mettessi via mazzuolo e gradine per terminare l’opera perché all’improvviso mi ricordai di quanto fosse stato cruento il crimine commesso da Bruto ai danni di Cesare. Non ero così sprovveduto e sapevo benissimo chi stessi scolpendo e perché.

Mi pare tanto una frase buttata là a posteri per giustificare in qualche modo il fatto che non avessi portato a compimento l’opera.

È vero che uccidere pare non essere mai una cosa saggia ma quando viene assassinato un tiranno? È sempre sbagliato? Può capitare che dopo la ferocia di un tiranno inizi a governare un altro peggio di lui. Il rischio c’è e la storia ce lo ha ampiamente dimostrato ma lasciarlo al suo posto non è comunque criminale?

Lascio queste domande in sospeso perché non ho risposte ma solo domande su domande chi mi affollano i pensieri. Se volete rispondete voi nei commenti: li leggerò con molto piacere.

The Bruto and the strange inscription on the pedestal

I sculpted the bust of the Brutus for Donato Giannotti who wanted to donate it to Cardinal Ridolfi.

Why did the conspicuously anti-Medici client really want to sculpt the one who had given the first stab to Julius Caesar? Because in this way he wanted in some way to celebrate the assassination of Alessandro de ‘Medici by Lorenzino de’ Medici: a murder that has always been seen as a sort of ferocious protest by Florentine exiles against Medici tyranny.

The Brutus is a fairly well-known work of mine although it is not very famous but few stop to read the writing affixed to the pedestal.

The plaque is engraved with these words in Latin: DUM BRUTI EFFIGEM SCULPTOR DE MARMORE DUCIT / IN MENTEM SCELERIS VENIT ET ABSTINUIT. As you know, I never wanted to learn Latin and don’t think I know it now.

I had the writing translated in a respectable way by those who surely know more than me on the subject and it means “When the sculptor was sculpting the effigy of Brutus in marble / he thought of the crime and refrained from completing it”.

Now it seems very strange to me that I put away the mallet and steps to finish the work because all of a sudden I remembered how bloody the crime committed by Brutus against Caesar had been. I wasn’t that naïve and I knew very well who I was sculpting and why.

It seems to me so much a phrase thrown there for posterity to somehow justify the fact that I had not completed the work.

It is true that killing never seems to be a wise thing but when a tyrant is murdered? Is it always wrong? It may happen that after the ferocity of a tyrant another worse than him begins to rule. The risk is there and history has amply demonstrated it to us, but isn’t leaving it in its place still criminal?

I leave these questions pending because I have no answers but only questions about questions that crowd my thoughts. If you want to answer them in the comments: I will read them with great pleasure.
