Sapete che in vecchiaia mi sarebbe parecchio garbato realizzare un atlante anatomico?

E’ una storia non così conosciuta ma voglio raccontarvela con grande piacere. Dopo la morte di Lorenzo il Magnifico, avvenuta l’8 aprile 1492, con la complicità del priore Lapo Bicchiellini, ebbi la possibilità di studiare anatomia dal vero sezionando i corpi dei cadaveri provenienti dallo Spedale di Santo Spirito a Firenze.

Affinai per anni le mie conoscenze anatomiche fino al 1496, anno in cui fui fatto chiamare a Roma dal cardinale Riario.

Accadde che mentre ero intento ad affrescare la Cappella Paolina dovetti abbandonare l’opera. I calcoli renali non mi davano tregua. Mi accolse in casa lo Strozzi e fui curato dal medico Realdo Colombo.

Era stato un allievo di Vesalio e in quel momento era impegnato a mettere nero su bianco un trattato anatomico che sarebbe diventato poi un vero e proprio pilastro per la medicina dell’epoca.

Fu allora che m venne in mente di rendere ancora più prezioso quel lavoro disegnando le tavole anatomico. In fondo chi conosceva meglio l’anatomia di me e la sapeva disegnare con tale precisione?

Realdo era al settimo cielo e affermò che “la fortuna mi apresentava il primo pittor del mondo a servirmi in questo”.

Purtroppo i miei tanti impegni non mi permisero di poter onorare quell’impegno e Realdo Colombo pubblicò successivamente il suo trattato anatomico a Parigi nel 1572 dal titolo De re anatomica senza le tavole che mi sarebbe piaciuto realizzare.

Realdo was over the moon and stated that “luck presented me with the first painter in the world to serve me in this”.

Unfortunately my many commitments did not allow me to be able to honor that commitment and Realdo Colombo subsequently published his anatomical treatise in Paris in 1572 entitled De re anatomica without the plates that I would have liked to have made.
