Il Cristo nell’orto che non ti aspetti
E se di improvviso vi trovaste in un giardino con al centro un Cristo scolpito da me? E’ proprio quello che successe all’Aldovrandi che descrisse l’episodio nel dettaglio. Mi siedo, mi bevo il quarto caffè della giornata e con calma vi racconto quella storia dal principio.
La realizzazione del Cristo Portacroce fu assai travagliata e mi costò anni di pensieri e turbamenti. D’altro canto quella commissione già di per sé era cominciata disobbedendo clamorosamente agli eredi di papa Giulio II.
Il 6 maggio del 1513 infatti avevo firmato il nuovo contratto per la Tomba di Giulio II della Rovere con i suoi eredi che di fatto mi impediva di intraprendere qualsiasi altro progetto che potesse ostacolare la realizzazione della grande opera.
Due settimane dopo accettai un incarico privato: il Cristo Portacroce. Contratto o non contratto, facevo come mi pareva.
Il contratto ufficiale per il Cristo risale al 14 giugno del 1514 ma già nel maggio dello stesso anno avevo aperto un nuovo conto appositamente per depositarci i pagamenti relativi alla nuova opera presa in carico da Marta Porcari.
Forse nemmeno avrete mai sentito parlare di Marta Porcari in relazione a questa commissione eppure fu proprio lei a richiedermi questo lavoro prima che morisse. Così poi furono i suoi tre nipoti, esecutori testamentari, a farsi carico della gestione della realizzazione dell’opera o meglio, fu solo uno dei tre, Metello Vari. Gli altri due si disinteressarono completamente alla questione.
Durante la lavorazione dell’opera saltò fuori la brutta venatura nera sul volto. Cercai dapprima di integrarla nei lineamenti del Cristo ma poi abbandonai l’impresa e ricominciai l’opera da capo.
Che fine fece dunque il Cristo venato? La regalai a Metello Vari che pensò bene di metterla in giardino. Fu allora che l’Aldovrandi ebbe modo di vederla e ne scrisse in questi termini:
In una corticella overo orticello, vedesi un Christo ignudo con la Croce al lato destro non fornito per rispetto d’una vena che si scoperse nel marmo della faccia, opera di Michiel Angelo e lo donò a Metello.”

Il Cristo venato fu poi venduto nel 1697 e riscoperto assai recentemente a Bassano Romano.

The Christ in the garden you do not expect
What if you suddenly find yourself in a garden with a Christ sculpted by me in the center? This is exactly what happened to Aldovrandi who described the episode in detail. I sit down, drink my fourth coffee of the day and calmly tell you that story from the beginning.
The realization of the Christ Carrier was very troubled and cost me years of thoughts and disturbances. On the other hand, that commission in itself had already begun by blatantly disobeying the heirs of Pope Julius II.
In fact, on 6 May 1513 I had signed the new contract for the tomb of Julius II della Rovere with his heirs which in fact prevented me from undertaking any other project that could hinder the realization of the great work.
Two weeks later, I accepted a private assignment: the Christ Carrier. Contract or not, I did as I pleased.
The official contract for the Christ dates back to 14 June 1514 but already in May of the same year I had opened a new account specifically to deposit the payments relating to the new work taken over by Marta Porcari.
You may never have heard of Marta Porcari in relation to this commission, yet it was she who asked me for this job before she died. So then it was her three grandchildren, executors of her will, who took charge of the management of the construction of the work or rather, it was only one of her three, Metello Vari. The other two became completely uninterested in the matter.
While the work was being worked on, the ugly black vein on his face came out. At first I tried to integrate it into the features of Christ but then I abandoned the company and started the work all over again.
So what happened to the veined Christ? I gave it to Metello Vari who thought it best to put it in the garden. It was then that Aldovrandi was able to see it and wrote about it in these terms:
“In a small courtyard, that is, in a vegetable garden, there is the naked Christo with the Cross on the right side not given to the client due to the vein that was discovered in the marble of the face, the work of Michiel Angelo and donated it to Metello.” Aldovrandi – Of Ancient Statues –
The Veined Christ was then sold in 1697 and very recently rediscovered in Bassano Romano.
